when you write a kernel, you cant use just standard C and you depend hugely on special implementation-dependent behaviour of compiler
thats why you cant for example compile linux with microsoft c compiler

if linus didnt have gcc, he would have to depend on some proprietary compiler, which all back then were only for one or few architectures each
which means that linux would have never ever become so widespread (because that happened due to its support of countless architectures)
