Do you encrypt your hard drive, Jow Forums?

Do you encrypt your hard drive, Jow Forums?

Attached: hdd-encryption-ubuntu.jpg (800x400, 29K)

of course, what kind of question is that
not only my NAS HDDs but also my laptop/desktop SSDs, portable drives and phone

I refuse to believe anyone with a bare minimum knowledge of technology doesn't encrypt their HDs and cellphone

nothing to hide

Good goy.

Please host a mirror of your disk on mega and post the link here for all of us.

Only my laptop

If the feds come for my PC I'm fucked anyway

I don't.

Use encrypted notepad for sensitive text and zip encryption for files.

If I was into some terrorist or criminal shit I would probably encrypt everything and use lanyard usb kill switch for laptop and totally skip using phone.

yes

i use winrar to archive my whole drive, then dban my whole drive

>nothing to hide
you browse Jow Forums. that is enough to get you arrested since your browser cache probably contains some illegal shit from just browsing here.
anyway, you're a stupid motherfucker who deserves to end up in prison with some Tyrone.

pay for my mega and internets

>your browser cache probably contains some illegal shit from just browsing here
nope i just lurk g mostly

>you're a stupid motherfucker who deserves to end up in prison with some Tyrone
rude and homosexual

Yes, FDE on all 18Tb of my archive hdds using truecrypt, it's only my primary SSD I don't for performance reasons.

No. For starters I use Windows which is inherently not secure. Secondly whenever you connect to the internet you can wave your privacy and data safety goodbye.
Just use an airgapped setup, there is no reason to encrypt the offline setup unless for some reason you're afraid of people physically invading your home.

So you chickened out, then. Fuck yourself faggot.

>So I chickened out (won't gif u muhney) hurdur

>Do you encrypt your hard drive, Jow Forums?
Every single one with a different password via LUKS.

No, because I'm a well-adjusted individual.

What software should I encrypt them with? Asking for adivce. Thought of VeraCrypt, but idk.

/thread

No because I'm not a pedophile nor a terrorist nor a Muslim

Good goy

Yes. With bitlocker.

I'm guessing this user hasn't heard of a laptop?

No why would i purposely slow down my computer

I only encrypt sensitive files

No, because I have an SSD

N-no. Am I under arrest, officer?

>not using LUKS/DM-crypt

it is like you are not even trying

Nah. "Too much trouble" considering very few have access to my pc and have technical know-how to even get in.

>Do you encrypt your hard drive, Jow Forums?

What is the point of doing that? Realistically if you have downloaded or researched anything the gobberment does not like they already know about it.

You'd have to be a moron not to.

I have nothing on my Hard Drive and haven't had anything since i bought a new pc.

All i have is family photos, school projects from the past and some Unity stuff.

>totally skip using phone.
Based.
Encryption and Anonymity are not the same thing

>your browser cache probably contains some illegal shit from just browsing here.
Not an attack vector. People that get "Caught" trough the internet often fail to use proper VPN and tor routing. Cache is encrypted if you do it properly. Maybe RAM isn't but that attack vector is only viable if a program bypasses virtual memory restrictions. I guess I found the stupid motherfucker who deserves prison time.

Based. 16 randomly generated hex/other character sets or complex dictionary?

>Based. 16 randomly generated hex/other character sets or complex dictionary?
random sentences, all at least 50 characters long

What's the point if theft isn't really a risk? As long as they're mounted the unencrypted data is exposed anyway. Or am I missing something?

>theft isn't really a risk
Do you live on one of the poles?

Nah, just a safe country, break-ins don't really happen. I do encrypt my phone though, just in case I lose it or something.

Entire internal drive is encrypted and for personal files only. System boots from USB stick.

I live in a safe country too, but I still realize that if a burglar ever breaks in while I'm out, my laptop will be target #1.

That seems awfully long. I use around 21 character passwords or 16 hex symbols.

Fun fact: Earlier versions of windows allowed more than 21 characters. Windows 10 has a max of 20. This came to my attention after the second failed install of windows 10 as dual boot because I couldn't get past the login screen.

Windows never warns you about the limit anywhere.

I didn't encrypt because I'm afraid that if my OS fails I won't be able to get my data back easily.

I don't really see why. The only thing it protects against is physical access, which I don't really have any reason to worry about. By far the greatest worry would seem to be remote exploitation, which hard drive encryption doesn't protect against anyway.

My SSD and HDD require a password before the BIOS.
Does that help anything?

There is a thing called backup

>he doesn't clear his browser cache after every session

Literally no reason to encrypt unless your work requires it. You’re just ruining your SSD slowing down your pc and making it hard to recover your data.

i encrypt by not encrypt and have a normie internet behavior, so hackers/govern thinks 'hey, there is nothing worth to view/stolen in this machine'.

>nothing to hide
>Anonymous

>Literally no reason
>stopping random Jamal from accessing all your data if he steals your PC is not a good enough reason
dumb

Jamal is going to give up at the password prompt

>Do you encrypt your hard drive?
No I encrypt my Solid State Drive.

And where do you put backups?

>not using 8MB keyfiles

you're a retard if you don't

Attached: 2018-10-26-1540570783.png (502x214, 58K)

nope.

not if it's a CIA Jamal™. They glow in the dark

No, I am afraid to lose my files and there's no chance of recoverability

Nice try, NSA.

Why you are posting on 'anonymous' website?
What's your full name?

How so? As far as I know, you can easily access the encrypted drive with another computer as long as you have the keys and the password.

What if encrypted hdd segfaults?

If the government wants your data they can get it, your shitty consumer grade encryption means nothing to cia niggers

I cannot encrypt my drive because i dont want pay $100 USD (x3) for enable Bitlocker in my 3 windows machines.
I cannot encrypt Linux drives because LUKS is a piece of shit. The Linux philosophy is "Worse is Better". This why everybody use FileVault of macbooks, the perfect encrypt utility.

Attached: Ayano.jpg (2400x3388, 843K)

Doubt it. If you encrypt data with a really strong password, there's no way they can bruteforce entry into it without a room-sized supercomputer.

data should be shared freely

why are technologically inept “””people””” allowed to post here?

>luks is a piece of shit
Yeah right lol, works fine for me retard

No, They can't.

They can however beat you over the head with a hammer every day until you give up the encryption keys.

Cracking this kind of encryption is easy for them, that’s not even counting the backdoors they got built into everything

Are you the same people who think tor and https can protect you from cia niggers

Why the fuck do you need bitlocker in a world where veracrypt exists?

I have nothing to hide so no.

If it's so easy for them then why did they have to ask Apple to let them unlock a simple iPhone? They can't, or at least they can't without dedicating a significant amount of resources to crack it.

>hurr cia can do anything and break all technology cuz cia lol

Fuck off. Not even worth going into detail about.

I highly doubt the sort of person who's in a position to be at risk of being beaten with a hammer by the CIA is brain-damaged enough to spend their free time hanging around Jow Forums.

We're waiting, please image your entire drive and post it here for us to download

"nothing to hide" doesn't mean someone has to go out of their way to let you in, genius.

100% pretence in order to justify putting more backdoors and monitoring into everything

Dig a little deeper into that story and it becomes obvious

What does being on Jow Forums have to do with anything. You don't need to be some high profile individual. It was mostly an exaggeration, but they can hold you in prison indefinitely if they have enough evidence against you to believe you have illegal content encrypted.

>Dig a little deeper
Every paranoid schitzo's favorite phrase.

That sounds like an excuse user, are you trying to hide something from us?

"nothing to hide" people are retards who misinterpret what personal privacy is about. It ain't about wanting to hide stuff from everyone, it's about having the autonomy to choose what you want to share and with whom. Even if I have nothing illegal on my drives, I have personal stuff that I won't share with people I don't know and trust. Even if said person is law enforcement or a fat fuck from TSA

How do you read that shit user?

No.
Not saying that I have nothing I'd want to hide from friends and family or your average Joe (like they'd even be able to operate my Gentoo+i3 laptop in the first place), but I have nothing that a criminal or 3-letter agency would benefit by obtaining from me, and would rather just do without the slight performance hit.

I'm using multiple keyfiles and a long 100+ char key for my encrypted drive which just contains family pictures and documents. Realistically, anyone encrypting their shit here is usually overkill for their threat model unless they're criminal scum or some shit

only cucks use laptop

only /home

LUKS on all my machines

Attached: breaking-news.png (1280x720, 1.8M)

No I just fill them with porn

Wouldn't it slow down my machines. idk ever since I transitioned to solid state I learned to never take disk performance for granted.

if i want something encrypted i just put it in a veracrypt cotainer

The only person who encrypting my hard drive has locked out has been me, historically.

>not grypto your ssd

either stop using a 2002 cpu or buy a ryzen peocessor

surely even your old cpu must have AES haardware acceleration support?

Hey Mark I was tasked by our CIA handler to dismantle encryption use on Jow Forums.

P.S. We're still on for lunch at Los Ranchos? Take care

No. I have nothing to hide. And no, that isn't synonymous with no desire to retain personal information. It's like saying I'm not ashamed of my body, but still don't walk around nude everywhere.

Nah because the things I want to store there are important, and If I forget the password I'm fucked.

Putting the password on a piece of paper and hiding it somewhere if my memory fails is not a good idea.

Nope, it makes life harder when it comes to backups and recovery. I only use cryptocontainers for sensitive stuff, and they are hidden with a plausible deniability and such. I don't get why people encrypt their / and /home, as if someone is after your dotfiles. Important things like keys are encrypted anyway.

The FBI only knows about the criminals who enter into sting operations.

Just don't actively try and do illegal things and you will be fine. Stumbling upon something on a website is not illegal, just clear your cache and never download it.
