Is IRC more or less dead?

Is IRC more or less dead?

Attached: 1536428730012.jpg (300x300, 19K)

sadly yes

it's still used by filthy nerds and niche communities but hip young zoomers use discord now

It has never been more alive.

Attached: fuck_illuminateds_mom.jpg (1350x1086, 423K)

not even close.
it powers twitch's chat system

Yep. Cause of death: lack of actual features and convenience.

The mainstream chat option is Discord. It's good, but it's proprietary and highly botnet.
If the above bothers you, there's Matrix, which is a new chat protocol with the most popular implementation being Riot.im.

>If the above bothers you
If it doesn't bother you then shoo shoo

yeah its totally dead, dont bother checking there's nothing there for you

I use it everyday, is impossible IRC be dead with all the boneheads announcing their channels like the bots from

More.

Twitch's chat system is proprietary and their IRC "network" is just a gateway that is only intended to be used by bots.

IRC in general should only be intended for bots by now.

All the cool people left IRC for Discord. Then those communities also desolved because Discord is a dumpster fire.

freenode is alive and well. lots of support channels for FOSS projects + channels for social stuff

>cool people left IRC for Discord.
>Then those communities also desolved because Discord is a dumpster fire.
this. fucking retards.

btw, infosec people usually vent on twitter, and also use telegram.

I use it every day.

>All the cool people left IRC for Discord
>All the cool people left IRC for Discord
>cool people
>left IRC for Discord
>Discord

It is dead for zoomers because they can't run it on their smartphones.

I use telegram

still as alive as ever, people having been calling it dead for over a decade now

>2018
>join irc server
>100 ppl online
>all afk
>no chatting going on at all
>server may as well be empty

matrix is the true successor

I'm thankful for Discord, IRC is much better without those who left.

more

that's my exact experience with every single IRC I've ever been in. IRC is shit.

I'm sure IRC is great with it only being autists wallowing in shit.

Attached: americans.jpg (960x1280, 86K)

That's almost as bad as discord

>used to idle in a private tracker IRC for ratio
>so many erp faggots who always end their lines with "~" or something similar in an effort to look kawaii
>so many admins who get mad at having to do the slightest amount of work or being asked their opinion on anything, handing out bans for something as simple as disagreeing with them
>legion of armchair moderator-wannabes who perpetuate the admin's assholery by acting like a swarm of flies for anyone who "misbehaves" while the admins aren't around
>Come join us for our IRC Christmas party!

IRC isn't dead, but I hope it will be soon.

Attached: a_disappointment_so_great.jpg (210x230, 7K)

I hope not. Just imagining all the tightly knit ultra-weeb communities circlejerking eachother in all lowercase makes me laugh.

>#baot
This channel is pure cancer, don't go there.

>use juicessh + irssi + mosh
>I shit post on irc channels from anywhere in the world
>I've sent messages while using urnials.

yeah but usually there was at least SOMETHING going on. In this case it was just tumbleweeds blowing by. Do youremember the old irc warez servers? There were all these people posting automated messages to join their little ftp servers and download stuff. Fun times. I had one also.

Yes.

You just need to join a heavily populated channel, #linux for example, and ask "asl?" You will be getting replies in no time!

freenode has ruined IRC for most people

because takeovers were such fun, amirite

It is still extremely prevalent in open-source software development.

Their chat network is still IRC, but over a websocket instead. Rip flash.

Unless you're a staff member for a private tracker there's no reason to use IRC in 2018.

Damn, your life sucks.

Almost, but at least it has replies

Finalchan still uses it for the majority of moderation tasks.

Oh yeah...
I hate those people.

it's ok to be jealous baby girl.

Just who is that semen demon?

>all lowercase
Why do this bother me? I feel like it shouldn't.

My last post to IRC: 5min ago.

The lainchan server it's more populated that its imageboard.

I need a place that feels like Jow Forums circa 2011 - Is there anywhere left that hasn't been coopted by cancer and edgy children?

Attached: D.png (238x236, 22K)

Jow Forums not talking about guro was never great, depending on your flavour of tech I'd recommend Hacker News or Phoronix.

IRC is alive and well

Attached: Screenshot_20181029-172339.jpg (1080x2160, 578K)

I use it daily, along with matrix. I've got a few small channels I'm in where I talk to good friends.

a bad IRC channel isn't much different from a bad Jow Forums thread. I wouldn't discount the whole thing over it.

I know that feel. Stopped using juicessh because it's proprietary, but I still use termux to attach to a remote tmux session with irssi in it. I can change computers or just use my phone and talk from everywhere. It's awesome.

People live all over the world and don't disconnect their clients. It's just a different kind of experience than what you might be used to. There are probably other people waiting for conversation, and it's normal to reply to really old messages, so you might as well talk in there and see who is around. You could also try some other channels.

>not having an XMPP server

all IRC channels are bad IRC channels

That's because it died about a decade ago and has been rotting ever since. The last server i went to join on a whim wanted me to register on their website and identify with some client token bullshit. Fuck that, IRC is dead with the exception of FreeNode and a few channels on rizon.

Attached: efnetgraph.png (897x287, 28K)

pic related, freenode has been the only large living irc network in years

Attached: irc_pop_dying1.jpg (580x435, 150K)

and to follow up, pic related shows 2018s user stats (dead)

Attached: irv_pop_dead_2018.png (640x400, 7K)

>That's almost as bad as discord
How so?

still use it to download anime

I like hacker news, but it's definitely different in tone from here ~6 years ago. I guess we'll never have that back.

>hunt down my old irc from 8 years ago
>user list a fraction of what it used to be
>only recognize a few names
>no one ever says anything
just let it die

Attached: 1521912441436.jpg (450x450, 10K)

>more
>or less
more

fuck man, that's a mcfucking lot

>one guy with his HAHA BTFO NIGGERS NIGGERS CHRISTKEKS KEK JEW KEK shit constantly interrupting genuine conversation
why do people do this? it hurts just reading it

Attached: 1519811201793.jpg (600x677, 47K)

this is nothing compared to the cringe colliders who use discord

I wish it would fucking die so open source communities would stop using it.
