If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine. 1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I just restarted my laptop and now it's doing this. It didn't used to do this, and the only thing I've changed recently is installing virtual manager.
How do I troubleshoot what in particular is causing this long ass boot time? Normally my laptop boots in ~1 second.
Henry Murphy
Why the fuck would you want to install both i3blocks and polybar?
Angel Sanchez
How do I make my xfce not look like a piece of shit?
Justin Diaz
Okay well I still have no idea why the hell networking.service is taking over a minute to start up, but I 'fixed' it by changing the timeout for it to 0 seconds.
Ryder Ross
Change your Theme and Icons, Adapta or Arc would be some good examples to look at.
David Howard
Is something fucked with Flash Player for Ubuntu 18.04? I've installed the fucking package in the repo (adobeflash-plugin) and it's not working in Firefox It used to work fine in 16.04
Joseph Robinson
Is installing ubuntu on an old HP netbook (1.7Ghz, 2gigram) a good idea to get it running faster than with WIN10?
Intended for use as a simple music player / Amp hookup
flash has been deprecated for like 10 years now Use html5
Kevin Moore
Install Debian.
Samuel Adams
I want to stop, but some fucking Youtube videos still show up only in flash and also some news site videos only show in flash. It's really annoying and I want to kill whoever thinks its acceptable. yes
Juan Stewart
>only in flash No they do not >some news site Use a better news site.
Logan Murphy
can we stop adding the GNU to the title to account for the fact that there are other linux distros than debian and parabola? and also to account for a typical install having many more packages than just coreutils + the linux kernel?
Dont use 20 year old versions of programs, you want the latest for the best features/performance with mpv
Jason Ortiz
What do you mean? I thought that the Ubuntu ppas would just be precompiled binaries of the latest version.
Dominic Rodriguez
If I want bitmap fonts is it normal to have to run xset +fp ~/.fonts/somefont at every reboot or am I doing something wrong?
Noah Hall

Jonathan Edwards
something triggers the spamfilter I think
How do I store system wide config files without fucking myself over? If I do git init --bare is that enough to not fuck my permissions and stuff?
Easton Ward
the gnu/linux - vitualbox - secure boot issue guy here: >decided to install virtualbox anyway, was asked to provide a password for the UEFI SECURE BOOT configuration to enroll MOK key ( I assume the kernel one with the virtualbox kernel modules) >entered password twice, installation finished >reboot >get the MOK screen asking if i want to enroll keys etc >yes >asks for passwod >"password doesn't match" tried several times with different passwords, wtf is this? does it use a specific keyboard layout? are there forbidden caracters? (it still accepted them when i chose the passwod) is there some max length? this shit is PISSING ME OFF
William Thompson
thanks for letting me post moot
>Another problem is that git doesn't store file permissions like the file system, and it doesn't store extended attributes. For files, git only stores whether they are executable. So if you want to restore a deleted file, its owner and group will be root (if you do it as root), and its permission will be 644 or 755. It may be problematic for services' configuration files whose owner is not root.
Carson Garcia
Whoever of you told me to install i3 last night... I think I'm gonna do it, just to see how it works.
Nolan Brooks
what if i dont want to update firefox and want to perform system upgrade without fucking up dependencies? how to manage those partial upgrades which for some reason are heavily discouraged t. manjaro retard
Hudson Gutierrez
>how do i avoid fucked up deps while deliberately fucking up deps?
Option three: Type part of simple command, hit arrow up once. bind '"\e[A": history-search-backward' bind '"\e[B": history-search-forward' Based Bash.
Elijah Brown
place `exec --no-startup-id xset +fp ~/.fonts` in your DE config file or bashrc
Liam Ramirez
That's how you do it with i3, silly. You don't need that exec part.
Jace Martinez
Are there any programming resources designed for those with adhd?
Sebastian Scott
okay so it's normal to run it every time, that was what I was wondering. thanks
Easton Baker
Haven't used Linux in 3 years
Is it good yet?
Zachary Brooks
Is the best way to undervolt in linux is have windows installed, use the better undervolting tools in windows, then get those settings then apply them in the BIOS?
Noah James
I was using control-r all this time.
Ethan Thomas
for some formats yes. though most bitmap font formats are supported by xft so you can use that instead.
Cooper Reyes
>it is true because the crazy zealots wrote it on their website xD no
nope >screen tearing in all distros >wayland not available for Nvidia users >extremely limited software availability due to outdated "no proprietary" repos >ppa, rpm break everything >distros require internet connection to install proprietary drivers, refuse to include wifi drivers on usb, hope you got an unlimited data plan user >for example, even if you knew this and downloaded your wifi driver before install, fedora doesn't come with dkms, kernel-devel, or make on the usb drive (le 13 mb bloat), so you need to download all those and all their dependencies >Arch wiki and AUR is the only way to get 95% of the things I want done >Arch fails to install programs due to newer package dependencies, such as freetype >cool tiling window manager config files will fuck you up if your folders have spaces in the title cd /media/New\ folder/My\ Data\ 2016/Fall\ Files/ >case sensitive commands >wine is hot garbage and runs significantly worse than running a windows VM >constantly asking for passwords >gui doesn't do what you tell it to, have to use terminal all the time for stupid stuff >have to open file browser as a root to do anything (dolphin can't open as root) and none of your folder bookmarks are preserved in root file browser >accidentally start working on a file in vim without root, can't write, open it again as root and do it over >xsetwacom 12 area 64503 36203 >nvidia-settings force full composition pipeline >.xauthority not writable
Eli Torres
I really want to like Devuan, but everytime I try to install, I upgrade to testing and then grub gets fucked (like the menu doesn't even show and goes straight to the command line) How do I prevent this from happening? >inb4 don't use devuan
Jose Miller
compile it yourself
Jackson Anderson
total brainlet here
is swap and root the absolute minimum requirements for partitions?
Justin Gomez
root and perhaps bios-boot or efi you can put your kernel images in a /boot directory that exists on root if you really want to though bios/efi should be its own
you can just put a 4GB file on the root partition, mkswap on it, and use that as your swap
Daniel Carter
Why not stay on stable + backports? Ive been considering myself whether or not to make the switch to Devuan as a Debian user. You can just have one big root partition and create a swapfile instead.
Joseph Russell
> avoid bloatware while using gtk3 lol
If you do anything useful with your computer, you're going to end up with a package count in the low thousands. If it makes you feel any better, 1800 packages on Ubuntu or Fedora is like 600 on Arch or Gentoo.
Anthony Stewart
I agree, I hate it too. I am trying to wean myself off the flash kanker but these fuckers are taking way too long to move to html5.
Justin Cook
you need something way lighter than ubuntu
you might be able to get away with xubuntu but I'd go with like void or something if you're competent at disk partitioning
Jackson Jones
Did you run update-initramfs -u or do you know if is a problem of the grub config itself changing?
Anthony Martinez
Just dont use the site, i dont know why you need to use them in the first place but maybe im too autistic to understand, 90% of that shit you can find on youtube anyway.
What to do on GNU/Linux when it freezes while Payday 2? In windows it's easy to pull the task manager, and you can fix any freeze without having to reboot; how do you do that on GNU/Linux?
Jason Martin
ctrl+alt+f1 to terminal, log in, find out process id using top/htop/ps, kill -s KILL , ctrl+alt+f7 back to GUI
Brody Foster
>Control+alt+function key >log in >kill everything
Jace Nelson
That's one of the things I tried, but that freezes too. I can't get into any terminal. I want to know the cool thing that never freezes like the task manager.
Charles Rodriguez
What program is freezing your distro? Also what distro are you using?
Ayden Miller
Trying my luck here since I got no answer at /sqt/:
I have a HDD that gives pic related error when plugged in directly into motherboard sata slot. The HDD itself isn't a boot HDD, it doesn't have any OS in it. But when I plugged it into USB using SATA/USB converter, it works. I could copy files in and from it, without any problem. It also doesn't make any funny noise. Does that mean the problem is either the sata cable or the particular SATA port on the motherboard that I plugged it in?
I tried googling status: DRDY, but all I've gotten were kernel bug that happened in 2009. And since I'm using the second latest updated kernel, I can be sure that it's not the same case, right?
frens is waybox usable yet? I love wayland but dislike tiling WMs
Isaiah Robinson
Debian Jessie, Payday 2 (when loading a new heist about 1/20 of the times).
Evan Bell
>Payday 2 So is WINE the guilty or is native? Anyway, either you activate the magic key en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key Or bind a key to killing the X server can work, you will return to the command line.
You should try finding the reason why it hangs though.
Kayden Sanchez
It's native, not even using the Steam compatibility thing. I'll just fucking install Windows again. You assholes conned me.
William Clark
Oh, I see, you are a troll. You are welcome for the solution then, too bad you never need it in the first place.
Eli Garcia
How the fuck do I make nvidia-settings save and load after rebooting? IU've tried everything people suggest, saving to X configuration file does nothing, adding lines to nvidia-settings.rc does nothing, neither does adding the line to xinitrc.
Pls help
Jonathan Rivera
Jessie is pretty old at this point i would suggest upgrading to stretch or testing since buster will be out soon.
Oliver Foster
>person realizes that GNU/Linux is vastly inferior to Windows >"he must be a troll" You're deluded as fuck mate. Cope harder.
Asher Peterson
Run it as root and save it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
>xinitrc Now i know you didnt even try
Blake Richardson
Tell me specifically what is your relation to Microsoft.
Benjamin Martin
I did try mate. xorg.conf.d is a folder for me containing 00-keyboard.conf and 90-mhwd.conf do I save it in this folder as xorg.conf?
Colton Gonzalez
Save it as 10-monitor.conf. Its an includes directory, anything in it will be bootstrapped when X11 is run.
Robert Butler
> You assholes conned me. Did you even update your kernel? Gaming on other than Fedora or the latest Ubuntu without knowing what you're doing is absolute folly, a large portion of the progress on that front has been in the last few months.
Cameron Thomas
Thanks I'll give it a go
Jayden Barnes
Why alsamixer has master db gain of minus 20 (-20 db) out of the box?
Lincoln Brooks
So you dont blow your speakers out
Andrew Mitchell
Makes no sense desu. Any other ideas?
Brody Martinez
Why would you want your mixer to be at 0db or higher gain by default?
Joseph Gutierrez
Higher - no. But 0 db is only logical. Widows has 0 db defaults.
Jackson Rogers
So edit your config to blast out the audio and have heavy distortion by default
Oliver Lopez
0db has zero distortions and won't blast anything unless the user is retarded? In that case all channels should be muted by default.
Landon Ward
I read "networking for dummies" and came across this line...
>Perhaps the most interesting OS now available is Linux. The free Linux OS is based on Unix, which is a powerful NOS often used on large networks. Linux was started by Linus Torvalds, who thought it’d be fun to write a version of Unix in his free time — as a hobby. He enlisted help from hundreds of programmers throughout the world, who volunteered their time and efforts via the Internet. Today, Linux is a full-featured version of Unix; its users consider it to be as good as or better than Windows.
What do you think?
Dominic Brooks
>0db has zero distortions and won't blast anything 0 db equates to 100% volume on that slider. At 100% you will notice distortions and it is around 90-100 DB. So yes, it will be fuck loud and have noticeable distortions even on the best sound card and best headphones.Loud enough to damage eardrums and equipment

Installed latest git sway on Kubuntu 18.04, it works fine when calling it from KDE but the sway session starts with a black screen. I have set sudo setcap "cap_sys_ptrace,cap_sys_tty_config=eip" /usr/bin/sway but it asks for cap_sys_admin. Even when giving it that permission it's still full or errors, permission denied and display problems. They really hate baby's first linux so there's zero documentation. Halp
