My experience:
Huawei is just better than Samsung for a given budget.
If you only want to spend for example $300 for a new mobile phone, Huawei is always better. Also every Samsung phone I had went shit after a few years (battery had to be charged more often, touch screen doesn't always recognize my inputs anymore, it seems that the phone gets slower with the time; even though I reinstalled everything from ground up, the phone has lost a lot of processing power over time).
With my Huawei phone I had ZERO problems so far. I'm even always up to date to the latest Android version. For me it's only Huawei. Also after looking deeper into Huawei, I realized that this is not just some little China shit company, but a really big guy who can easily compete against Apple. Huawei also produces so many things, that it can easily be called the Samsung of China.
This is what happens when you go straight to the sources.
Apple and Samsung make big profits off having manufacturing done in China, Chinese companies are just cutting the profit margin to put out the same shit and also reducing the number of supply loops they need to go through which also keeps costs down.
Samsung does okay even if they lose. They make the storage, DRAM, and displays.
Those chinese companies are probably just buying Samsung made components anyway. DRAM, LCD panels, OLED panels, NAND, even the NAND controllers IIRC, semiconductor fabrication. They're one of the most vertically integrated companies in the world. They even make their own SoCs with a custom ARM core, though only for Asia because of qualcomm's 4G radio monopoly, and they even have custom GPUs, in lab only though. The only thing holding them back is work culture from what I hear. I work for a big mobile company and we have a lot of samsung "immigrants" and the general consensus is that it's a fucking shit show over there and they're probably going to outsource more in the future. If there was ever a company with more money and power than sense it would be Samsung

No Chinese buys a Chinese brand phone if they can help it. Chinese-branded phones are for Chinese poorfags. The only exceptions for this are people who will literally die for country and think buying non-Chinese phones is traitorous.
The fact that Huawei and Xiaomi are gaining market share and Samsung is losing it is probably more of a testament to China's suffering economy and the consumer's tightening budget more than it is any actual preference for Chinese brands.
So if Samsung wants to get back into the market, they just need to start offering more budget options.
But that probably won't work out -- a big part of why Chinese phones are so cheap is because the Chinese gov. literally subsidizes these phones to make them cheaper to try to push out competitors from the market -- Samsung will never be able to compete with Chinese phones on price.

I personally don't buy Samsung, but many people I know do, my father has gone through 2 S7's that fell less than 2ft, my brother in law lost an S6 and S7 to fall of less than 2ft, my sister lost an S6, my cousins have lost several S6-S8 phones, only two of my mates still buy Samsung, they've lost an S7 each. All from falls LESS than 2ft.
The screen either flashes/has purple corruption, goes off entirely or any combination of them (and usually progresses from flashing/purple to dead in less than 3 days)

I used a Samsung Galaxy E for close to 4 years. Fantastic phone, really loved it. came with stock android 2.2 and without touchjizz. did have some uninstallable samcuck crapware though. always ran pretty fast even though it basically had no RAM
