Systemd is so good that RedHat was pouring money in it's propaganda. First, it was the fastest init system. I tried, it never was. Second, any critism was systematically downvoted on forums like Reddit, Slashdot, HackerNews, etc. Third, many bugs were refused to be resolved/changed because I don't know why. And they were critical, like devices getting bricked. But were not solved. Fourth, Gnome was made Systemd dependent. And then slowly it started to spread into a lot of functionality that wasn't traditionally included in an init system. Now they don't even pretend that systemd is a init system. Nowhere in their website it mentions that.
But you say that Poettering did nothing wrong? I still haven't forgiven him for PulseAudio.
