Norwegian here. Practically all Norwegians spend a lot of time in nature and know how to ski and know how to sail. I have no professional connection to sailing but like all Norwegian know the basics about sailing, including with sails, basic navigation including by the sun and the stars etc. The crew should even more and have all modern navigational equipment.
That sinking is a (very expensive) national embarrassment and the only plausible explanation was that the crew was blind drunk. A lot of the officers are facing a career as pedestrians.
