Sound cards

What is your excuse Jow Forums?

I got one and the difference in sound quality was night and day compared to my motherboard built in unit. I’ve been changed.

I have a 20 dollar behringer usb sound card, it's decent.

My last sound card was a soundblaster 16 on ISA port.
I don't miss them.

which card?

>What is your excuse Jow Forums?
i have no excuse as i already have a sound card
its the same one as in this image.

i'm poor and ALC887 sounds ok enough

Got an old PCI X-Fi card, pretty decent compared to onboard RTL, especially that I got it for free from someone who no longer had any PCI on his mobo.
It's a soundcard with a fuckin' heatsink, nothing else speaks "I do my stuff in hardware, not software" louder than that

While you shouldn't thread yourself, this post does deserve it

any hiss that here is disappears at 60% volume and i listen at 6%

I bet you're the kind of pople who buy audiophile power cables

I want to get a small headphone amp because I hope it will give my ATH-M50's the extra bit of power I think they need. I'm running it off my mobo 3.5 plug and I don't have a dedicated sound card. Would a little amp be appropriate or should I get a sound card then an amp?

Not at all, I put a hard limit on audio gear at 150$. Mainstream mid-high range is good enough.

Get a USB DAC, like FiiO E10 or something in that form factor. It has both high and normal modes.

So do I. I have a 24 bit DAC in my receiver with optics input.

Would a sound card affect the quality of sound coming from my computer?

I'm rocking ASUS Xonar DGX, it's pretty good

I bet you are the kind of person that hates their life.
External dacs are better than sound cards in every way imaginable, period. Its better solution to the problem from technology perspective, more convenient, functional and if you get cheap one, hardly more expensive.
There is very little reason to ever use sound card, and its if you are piss poor and your onboard is complete shit. But in this case you buy some cheap shit and not one of those memes that op posted.

>implying pci sound cards are only dacs

>better solution from technology perspective
Except audio requirements have been static for 30 years and SHOULD have been integrated into DSPs long ago and included on every human-oriented board because we have hearing.

>more convenient
Except that whole having to carry and/or power it.

>functional
Built-in audio is suitable in every case except when it malfunctions or is set up wrong. The only annoyance is proprietary drivers. Only problem I've seen recently is laptops that use a single out+in jack.

Why don't you have a dozen of them?

I have a Scarlett 2i2 and it's a piece of shit. What should I get to replace it?

babyface pro

Get just a good amp connected by USB like a normal, functioning adult.

I have a Beringer UMC22 and its input is super noisy and the output constantly crackles. I really need to replace it,it's almost time impossible to record anything with it,I have to gate my guitars DI so much just so there's no hissing

>amp
>connected by usb
you listen to amplified usb signal?

You can integrate all you want, but you still need non-shit-tier capacitors and Creative has a history of terrible parts and so do most motherboard manufacturers.

USB DACs are mostly powered by... USB!

I've had one for a few years, no problems except that it pops when windows boots.

What's wrong with it user, im looking at the scarlett solo right now

when did you order and what delivery method?

PostNL from bulgaria here, pic related

>he doesn't amplify nor listen to his usb signals

ALC1220 is pretty good

I have an Alesis Mixer USB. Too bad that shit doesn't filter the 5v rail and recording on it is impossible.

I'm currently using my usb-soundcard which came with my hyperx cloud ll headphones. pic related.
Is it worth it to upgrade to something like the external Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD?

>when did you order

"AliExpress Standard Shipping", it was either that or ePacket. The store is still processing my order now.

How's the headphone output on scarletts? I have behringer umc and it's only really usable for mic in.

you are fake news

Attached: mWcnk.jpg (1547x832, 113K)

so its viable to get a good soundcard nowadays? creative was fucking stupid and lost its way to pc's to fucking realtek

because i have a external dac, cheaper and better

You mean it actually works properly on official kernel? Since when?

ah good then, thanks.
I heard some anons had theirs shipped already but I didn't ask where they're from

2. >threaading your own fucking post
how new are you? or you're simply baiting

I have a USB powered dac/amp

I have a UMC202 HD for about an year and it's pretty good for the price. Perhaps you should get one of these or something else in the HD series.

Don’t get a card, get an (external) interface. Presonus or better, I love my RME Fireface. I’m in pro audio so it makes sense to me.

I still use my z680's familia.

Enjoy your noise.

I have something like that. The output hums. I think that's why my buddy got rid of it. Creative Soundblaster Model SB0270

No it would likely be a worse dac than yours

Putting a soundcard inside a metal box of RFI is dumb. All worthwhile audio interfaces or USB, Thunderbolt, or ancient Firewire.

Every device in this picture is shielded.

Standalone PCIe sound cards sitting next to 250W GPUs are not protected at all. Not to mention that PCIe power supply is shared with all devices.

>2019
>using internal soundcard

Go read how the power supply system works in USB devices.

Local regulation from 5V happens inside the peripheral device, which is shielded, instead next to tens of other devices on a motherboard.

>lets make them think this open piece of metal is actually a shield
>also lets expose the main chip so it looks cool
>next on the agenda: adding LEDs
>watercooled sound cards coming 2020

>>watercooled sound cards coming 2020
Sure why not. PCI-E 12V connector powered DAC with an actually usable built-in amp, cooled by water so you can really destroy your hearing before you're 40

God damn it Creative i was only joking... it's actually a product...

> i became one with the universe
> it called me a faggot

My last one was a Soundblaster Xfi. It was amazing, then it died(2010) and I haven't bought one since. This Evga motherboard has some bullshit on it. I don't know what it is. I bought this mobo off my friend for 100 bucks after he didn't like that it wouldn't overclock or something.

Attached: 2018-11-16 21_57_49.jpg (1075x772, 345K)

This thing does have what seems to be a dual-mono setup for the headphone amp at least

Sound cards are generally better than onboard audio, but not quite as good as external solutions.

However, they have benefits like not needing external power and not taking up desk space. You have to prioritize what is important to you, but this old discussion of sound cards being rubbish is tired and false.

Xonar Essence STX owner from 2013 here and I won't be going back to onboard or sidegrading/upgrading to an external DAC/AMP solution

Feels good, man.

Same here but with the Focusrite Solo + HD599.

And I have 3x X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series.
I have no idea how I got the third one.

Internal sound cards also have the advantage of being PCIE attached which can improve latency.
In the more professional audio world this is the reason for using thunderbolt on everything.
Granted USB can be just as good but that requires effort from the manufacturer

because external DACs are superior

>What is your excuse Jow Forums?
My active speaker takes USB input

>active speakers
Has got the be the worst meme in computer audio or just audio in general

same here. steinberg mk22 or whatever its called. these essentially have an on board sound card right?

So PCIe to USB to Controller to DAC is better than PCIe to Controller to DAC how exactly?

>>almost 2019
>>not having a sound card
imagine living in a universe that goes reverse, on board audiocards are at the point that you don't need any soundcard and if you need more power for speakers/headphones buy an AMP

soundcards were relevant 20 years ago

Attached: 1536156952609.png (640x640, 108K)

>but not quite as good as external solutions.
Output quality wise, they are the same (when comparing two high end models). But usually have better drive support and less latency as they don't require a middleman protocol/interface.

they are worth every penny

UR22?

Yes

Also, currently working on an application similar to the Sound Blaster Control Panel in Windows so people who aren't familiar with a CLI don't have to use alsamixer.

Attached: c3dcp-outfx-window.png (810x629, 45K)

>not sending a digital audio signal to your receiver

Onboard has improved greatly over the years, but if you want just an AMP, why buy something to sit on your desk, most headphones can use the onboard AMP.

Sound cards and external boxes are just as relevant as they ever were

kek

>using a receiver
You'd be better off with onboard and chink monitors.

powered monitors aren't exactly a revelation.

I got that one a few months ago--I like it a lot, but nobody told me I had to physically keep it away from my GPU lest I get constant electronic buzzing whenever it turns on. Still, very noticeable upgrade over stock sound, good stuff.

I don't get how
Maybe if your that constrained on space that you just can't have a separate amp maybe I can see that as valid
but personally if I'm going to blow a few hundred dollars on speakers I'm not letting a built in amp be the weak link. I like to keep shit around

also make sure you plug in the front audio ports into the side of the card.

Attached: creative-sound-blaster-audigy-rx.jpg (300x250, 30K)

I have a customised Essence STX II 7.1 in a external PCIe enclosure with a seperate audiofool rated (non ATX) power supply dedicated for it.
