My computer use has not changed much in the last 25 years, yet I am once again am considering buying a 3rd computer with new software and hardware, just to complete my daily tasks. The old ones still work, they just don't meet some new standard that has been forced on me. A new computer every 8 years is madness!

Webdev is borderline impossible with that much nowadays. I've had my web browser take up 3 GiB of ram with just 2 tabs open. I had to upgrade my personal rig to 16 GiB just to be able to work, I need to run some bloated websites to work (mostly communication stuff).

The ancient gaming rig I use at home has 4 GiB of RAM, and it seems that that is it's limit. I don't have trouble with memory there, even if I do productive stuff for myself. In fact, I had trouble running out of memory even when I had 3 GiB of RAM in it unless I ran games on the source engine.

High-end DDR4 gets 14-14-14-34 at 3200MHz, which is less absolute latency. And that's before manual overclocking.

At the end of the day, the performance-experience for doing the same thing we were doing 10+ years ago is sadly close to what it was then as now.

As for me: I mitigated the end-of-life on my '04 T61 (4GB)
1. Upgrading to Windows 7(cracked) from XP it came with.
2. Forefox (latest), never updated IE, or anything windows updates actually. Also cranked the IE security to max to make it further functionless.
3. OpenOffice, GIMP, FoxitReader (you get the idea)

My only limits are I cant do 60fps in youtube, and no gaming obviously, but I have a gaming machine for that.

On the plus side, I can run Vocaloid4FE no prob, MPC-HC, and VirtualBox

Moral of the story: avoid the major bloatware and surf responsibly (no malware, oh and I don't use anti-virus either)
