I have a 4th gen iPad, and we have 2 more at work. We use them for a single purpose - remote mixing and lighting control. This is in the world of event production, as in sound/lighting/etc for things like concerts and press conferences.
The iPads work for remote control perfectly, are built solid as fuck, have a ridiculous battery life, and the dropped support for newer versions of iOS actually works in our favor because the last version they support (like 10.3.something I think) has been perfectly stable and doesn't dick us with forced updates and 20 popups the second it gets connected to the internet. Which, to be fair, very rarely happens but not having to worry about 50 cocks being injected into these things is nice. Also the console manufacturers develop their remote apps on as old an API as is reasonable specifically because they know the vast majority of their customers use older generation devices and/or iOS versions just because they're much better for the few things they use them for.
I would never replace the iPads with Android tablets and I would never replace my Android phone with an iPhone. I have a remote app for my lighting console on my phone which I use to control lights during setup when I'm up in a lift focusing and it works fine, but I would definitely trust one of our iPads more for critical things and being reliable through months of different shows

Even without rooting, Google has no ability to control what applications you run on your phone. It is possible to simply download an .apk and run it without going through the Play Store. It is also possible to download applications through alternative stores. This is not possible on iOS.
