I think self driving cars are better than normal cars because it's nobody's fault if some stupid jaywalking old cunt gets killed.

First of all, I don't do airplanes because they are botnet, especially the airport, and not only that, there's a lot less obstacles for the plane to hit in the sky.

Airspace is tightly controlled, especially near landing zones whereas any retard or their dog can jump in front of your car

and? flying a plane is 100x easier than driving a car between starting and landing.

Planes don’t remove the human aspect of it even if it’s automated and it’s only automated during crusing, they have not automated landing and takeoff. Plus airspace is fully monitored and regulated so nothing can get in the way of a plane unless they like getting shot by Chairforce planes. Also there is TWO pilots unlike self driving cars where it’s “”piloted”” by a NPC.

Self driving cars aka Tesla, people turn on the autopilot and literally fall asleep and then surprised where they crash and die. Something similar would happen if pilots did the same.

true, but on the surface roads, and vehicles, and humans provide a complex detecting and routing problem.
Meanwhile almost all air vehicles connected to an air control system and heavily trafficked with radar, and in case of collision the pilot have 8 ways to avoid the crash with minor consequences, meanwhile on earth you have split seconds to turn right or left, and wishing the best

>move in a straight line at constant speed with no obstacles

>they have not automated landing and takeoff
Except they do?

I look forward to self-driving cars because I'll get taken home automatically when drunk as fuck.
But it will make manual cars illegal at one point which sucks for the minority who doesn't want to be in botnet.

>aircraft
Significantly less complex in error prone areas then a car.

A car has to do an enormously large and enormously complex amount of image recognition and has to deal with a lot of extremely unpredictable information.
With a plane "keep direction speed and altitude" is in almost any situation, where the auto pilot is engaged, not a bad idea. But imagine the same for a car, it has to actually detect very complex situations and find the right action, very fast.

ILS is not an automated landing procedure, and there is currently no substitute for human pilots during takeoff and landing.

Aircraft autopilot is just cruise control for speed, altitude and direction. It keeps the plane flying straight in the direction you're going and that's it. It works okay because as long as you stick to the flight plan, you won't encounter anything in your airspace. It's not like a car where anything can just jump out in front of you at any time.

Are trains automated? Are trams?
If you can't even automate vehicles that have a completely set route, what makes you think you can automate ones that don't?

Some metro/subway/tube lines are automated. It's a matter of time before they all are, and trains will follow.
Nowadays pilots are here to safeguard the landing procedure, but it is automated. They also are here for emergency landings or in case of electronical failure.
So yes while their role is necessary, the "ordinary" course of commercial flights are fully automated.

>metro/subway/tube
No people, one direction, literally inside a concrete tube.
My 70 year old grandmother could automate that.

If you want to be all "I fucking love science" and shit, focus on things that might actually be doable.

They are, but they usually require personnel on them anyways, by law, just in case.

Where?
And I mean trams and trains, above ground, not subway "trains".

The car will kill you if it detects one of god's chosen jaywalking instead.

its not

Paris line 1 is automated, is also the most frequented with 172.000.000 travels per years and growing. Approximately one train every 2 minutes from 5h30 to 1h30.

I believe some of our trams are automated, usually freight trains are automated and throught the country some automated bus lines and navettes(small buses) are being tested.
And we are frogs, literally 10 years behind in non-military tech.

Flying a plane is incredibly easy and requires minimal attention. Driving a car requires constant attention. The difficulty is incomparible.

dem rapefugees need high capacity cheap transportation, carry on france

military avionics platforms
want some hardware, son?
it'll cost ya

>>"Self-driving cars are dangerous technology!"

do people really believe this? on Jow Forums?
Self-driving cars don't need to be perfect, they just need to be better than humans, and humans suck.

We are one of the countries that took the least of them. Right now the big bother is taxes on gas, not an imaginary invasion shilled by the media.

wrongest post ever, even that biggest fucking civil plane has automated landing, pilots just watch in case something goes horribly wrong and in that case they are instructed to scream

Yeah, and it's still just a subway. The first automated freight train are mostly still being tested.

This.
Although two more points:
You don't even need to be better than the average human, being better than the worst humans is still an improvement. Imagine getting rid of that 33th percentile of drivers that are the worst.
Also any improvement will apply to all self driving cars at once.

>We are one of the countries that took the least of them
is that what macaron told you???

France has been taking on algerians and north africans for so fucking long now

ILS (coupled with autopilot) can land the place but pilots are still required to take control and land plane themselves

> to Bobigny
It's like saying "to Brooklyn"
True. To the point where they are a stagering 6-8% of the population. There is probably just as much italians and portuguese as there is morroccans and algerians. +5% blacks.
How can we ever recover?

>We all signed off on it, so it's nobody's fault
-something I heard at work once
If an autonomous motor vehicle kills a pedestrian it's going to be the fault of whoever decided that the motor vehicle was safe to be used in a public space.

Dumb zoomer, stop making retarded threads

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_train_operation#Urban_passenger_railways
granted, a lot of those are subways because it's easier and safer for an autonomous train to operate in the super controlled and road-crossing-free environment that is underground, but trains have progressively gotten more and more simplistic to operate
they still need some human input but as I said, most companies are required to do so, not only because of law, but as a failsafe, insurance and maintenance reasons
I'd expect modern trains to be easily upgraded into a driverless system, or at least something that a mouth breather can operate so the company can save some shekels in wages

You really think it is hard to judge elevation and surface properties with existing AI and CV tech?

Trains already reduce wage expenses significantly over trucks, for example.
You'd get astronomically more gains per dollar paying an engineer to design better infrastructure and parts than you would paying a """koder""" to replace the small amount of labor required to operate the train.

It is. Theres no bad pilots in the sky to watch out for like there are drivers on the roads. Once you're at a high enough altitude, it becomes pretty hard to fuck up flying unless you're doing something completely reckless like flying on a quarter tank of fuel over and through the Rocky Mountains in a snowstorm.

im less likely to be hit by an aircraft than a car you mong

Piloting a plane is 9000x easier for a computer than driving a car

I'm excited for when the cars start being fucked.
>retarded teens are going to start putting screwdrivers through the sensors
>the retarded owner will have to pay 400 bucks to get the car towed and an additional 5000 for the sensor
>retarded mechanic will do a shit job of repairing it and it'll break in the middle of a drive and crash, killing dozens
>mfw
I am excited.

Self-driving cars will become a prostitution loophole for Americans.

porn is the prostitution loophole

>Sex for money is bad! w-wait, you're filming it? Oh hell yeah fuck that ASS on camera and SELL THAT SHIT BRO!

Once you're a few hundred feet off the ground you'd have to try pretty fucking hard to find something to collide with.
The same can't be said of self-driving cars which need to constantly recognize and avoid hitting things.
Honestly I'd feel a lot better about things if they stopped trying to use cameras, image recognition, and AI; and used lidar and smart roads instead.

bommers gonna boom
