I really like GNOME, honestly. It's the most simple and elegant DE out there, it's great out of the box! If you buy a computer today it will be at least with 4GB RAM so why would you worry about 800mb being used?
KDE and xfce both have more customization options but that can backfire aswell, because gnome has a dock out of the box, and dock is way more pretty than the standard desktop. (If didn't want a dock i could just aswell use Windows). If you want to set up a dock on KDE is a hassle. Everything on those two DE's is a hassle because you spend so much time just looking for what do you want to customize (for noobs, of course)
So yeah, if you are an experienced linux user i understand why use KDE or xfce, but GNOME is more elegant out of the box for the lazy and inexperienced
Experienced users will dig some of the non-default spins of the distro, while newcomers can have a simple, beautiful and solid DE
if gnome ran better and used less ram and cpu and didn't depend on systemd and stopped removing features then I would happily use it. I love it's dynamic workspaces and overall workflow

Memory footprint improved since 3.30 and you can patch it to not depend on systemd. Also GNOME is designed to have as little features ootb as possible and be customised via extensions

yes I know all of that but since a large amount of the desktop is coded in javascript it doesn't matter how much you try to improve it will always run like shit and eat a ton of cpu and ram and it doesn't help all the extensions are also coded in javascipt. the fucking boated monster just needs to be fully rewritten because that's the only way it would actually run well on all hardware. just talking about the stupidity of the gnome devs really pisses me off and watching people defend them blows my mind. I went back to using Unity on my Thinkpad. It's way more polished than the turd that is the current Gnome. Plus it still has the Alt HUD which is nice. Gnome devs are actively working against implementing it (they disabled the code paths and refuse to accept patches)
