This is genuine question, I used HexChat and connected to freenode and even there the quality of discussion seemed lower than on Discord, I didn't see people getting their questions answered and most messages were bots/announcements.

So what's the point?

IRC is a dead platform. It's fucking DEAD. All the 'Users' you see are just fucking idle bots in a de-attached screen+irssi session. Nobody is going to talk to you or answer questions. These irc connections have been running for years on some far flung seedbox and only when the contract runs out will the guy say "Well I don't really use that shit any longer" and not bother to log back in. The user counts on the main IRC channels is 90% "bots" at this point. Maybe a few hundred across all of Freenode are actually active users.
