Put immense effort into my own open source projects

You’re supposed to charge people money, give them the impression that your software is actually something of worth

>working for free

free as in freedom, not free as in price

> too cheap/lazy to pay for private github repos
> y-yeah i write OSS

Well, duh. Open source is "free" in every sense of the word - which by definition means it's worthless.

>Have open source chrome extension with 2 github stars and 5 star rating on the chrome store
feels good man

Your program needs to actually be useful if you want people to use it. What does the software do?

well be like me
I don't care if it is used or not, just doing it as a hobby

How is anyone going to find it if you don't shill it everywhere

>develop elegant yet useful open source project
>profit
WRONG

>develop elegant yet useful open source project
>use this project as proof of your abilities to get hired for a good paying job at a soul sucking tech company
>hate life more than ever
CORRECT

Either your software’s purpose is worthless, or you aren’t dressing it up to be nicer and more user friendly than the paid counterpart.

or it is the paid counterpart

this pic looks like literal hell

Yep, and judging by how hard everything looks (even the carpet, it looks like a bunch of thin panels glued to concrete) I bet it must be noisy as fuck in there

You can still probably get away with masturbating

but the CORRECT one should be more like
>develop elegant yet useful open source project
>have an actual business model besides "put it for free up on github and beg for donations"
>profit

> spend years making a game
> nobody plays it
I know the feel user...

what game?

I'm sure I could even in a small office, but I'd need to wear a condom to catch it, I think I could manage it just with my own thighs ;^)

p-please link your game

Not gonna make it, where's your confidence user
Also in before you dox yourself

Your supposed to write software that is useful for yourself.

>develop closed-source, shitty software that costs an exoribitant fee
>people fucking hate it
>gets negative reviews, refunds demanded

>meanwhile, also develop the OSS equivalent, but way better
>people fucking tolerate it
>becomes super popular, beg for donations like pitiless garbage

So you're the guy that made 7zip

...poor frogposter

You're doing it all wrong. Paywall some features. Advertise. People will use it and you have incentive to keep working on it. It's called capitalism.

Then say "free software", not "open source".

put buzzwords on the topic section if you’re using github

kek, if people don't want your shit even for free you're really bad. lol. I sell the software I write at $50/pop and people buy it like retards. Made $11k this month already.

commie bullshit propaganda. in theory you could sell you shitty little open source projects but no one does it because they know that shit is worthless. if they intended to make something of worth they wouldn't put it out for free (as in communism) in the first place

>nicer and more user friendly than the paid counterpart
no open source project ever achieved this. there's a ton of free (as in communism) competitors to my software and yet peoples still prefer paying me $50 for a license over using the commieware alternative

It's 2018. No one will want to play your indie trash, unless it's a porn or meme game.

Tell us fag. There is nothing wrong with posting it here. And there is no actual link with your game.

What have you made mate?

>put immense effort into my own open source projects
>nobody uses them
Clearly the best course of action is spamming these threads on Jow Forums for months without actually telling anyone what projects you have been working on.

This.
It's better to make less, yet doing what you want, than make more, and lose soul, smile and optimism at same time doing something you don't even want to do.
