What did people do with computers before the internet?
What did people do with computers before the internet?
They used them as tools.
Think calculators, computer algebra systems, accounting software, inventory management, point of sale, 3D modeling, drafting, image manipulation, video production, controlling precision industrial equipment, etc.
I mainly used paint and DOS games that ran from floppies
>3D modeling
lol retard
They usually had radios. Before they had computers they had radios too.
ffs op you can create your own data pipeline (a rudimentary internet) using just homebrew radios, where do you think that comes from?
Run software

I'd just like to interject

This board is safe for work.
don't listen to that first post clearly made by a zoomy who only wishes he was alive during the 80s the last soulful decade, i'm old enough to tell you this : when we got our first computer the big debate in my family was if we should get a computer or a electronic typewriter (yes electronic typewriter), that alone should tell you a lot...this was around 1991, the computer was very expensive and the "accesory" printer too. it was not for everybody and we did not use it for 3D modeling nor video production (WTF!!)...we used mainly for text processing and some games, i remember the first encarta.. things like that. game consoles were much more ubiquitous. this is also true
>this was around 1991
>we did not use it for 3D modeling nor video production (WTF!!)
this was not common for home users. there was a lot of cool tech back in those days BUT the OP is asking at a "regular home" level.
i remember playing demo games that came with magazines.
>Adam Sandler: Before he got famous
She looks cute but they should've picked a picture where her eye isn't spazzing out
dialup bbs
same shit we always used computers for... games!
>What did people do with computers before the internet?
Gaymen
"Word processing"
Printing banners and calendars and shit
They were mostly inventing linux.
If you were like me, you were learning every nook and cranny of your chosen computer in an attempt to create games or demos showing off what you learned
Pic related, I had an Atari 800XL from '84 through '97. Picked up an Atari 520ST in '88 while I was in high school. Did a shitload of programming on both machines back in those days.
programmed in basic and assembly
Actual productive stuff, most likely
My mother had a Brother "Electronic typewriter" around 1994 that actually had a an amber monochrome screen and ran a very basic operating system with a full word processing suite. It also had an excellent port of Tetris.
Screw around with programming.
Play pirated vidya off BBSes.
Post on BBSes.
jack off
I used to get DOS shareware games on floppies from a mail-order catalog. The day I got a CD-ROM drive and a CD full of those games was pure magic.
I didn't have internet until my senior year at high school so i used my computer to fuck around with windows. I wasn't aware of existance of unix but if i did i would be way ahead of my peers. Oh well.
Video games bought in stores on cartridges, tapes, discs. Text writing and business maths. Viewing porn (especially from cd onwards).
I paid $50 ($100+ now, I think) for my first cd full of demos and shareware.
Solitaire and install stuff off of floppys
