Those of you with any of the home speaker/assistants - what do you use it for?

Those of you with any of the home speaker/assistants - what do you use it for?

I've been offered one for the holidays, but I don't really know what I'd do with it.

Apple Homepod if you're already very invested in the ecosystem (i.e. use and prefer Apple Music over anything else because Homepod won't play music from anything else), Amazon has more compatible services because they've been around longer, Google has the best voice assistant. I don't own any but I've goofed around with them and I think the Google one is probably the best bet.

Throw it out, why do you need something in your house that keeps logs of everything you say?

Don’t accept any smart speaker. If you want speakers, just get a regular one.

epic

Toggling the lights/AC, getting the time/setting a alarm when I wake up too early

I use a pair of HomePods as my living room stereo for movies and music (via Apple TV AirPlay). They sound fantastic. Never been a big Siri user so I hardly ever bother with that.

Is this any different from a smartphone's Siri or Google, though?

I mean, they are the same exact thing
I have siri disabled on my phone too

It rapes the battery life and has a high chance of being triggered by someone else if you are out and about. Better to just spend the $20 to get a dedicated device.

i have two echo dots hooked up to traditional speakers, they're really helpful actually

they're great for calendar/to-do functions, especially when they're sync'd with trello through ifttt skills. mostly use it for music and weather/news though.

comfy botnet.

>Willingly placing a bugging device in your house.

Smart speakers are kinda like tablets. You'd think it's useless until you actually have it, then you can't go without it.

>like your phone and laptop aren't already bugs
just give in user

No, not really. That's why I haven't gotten one. Unless you absolutely NEED Alexa, most other voice assistants who live on your phone will do well enough.

I have both Google Home and Alexa in my bedroom
I have control over the lights, and the coffee machine, working on the bathroom next...

It's not like you need them, but it's fun if you can afford one

I just use an old iPad. Had it jailbroken to enable "Hey Siri" works exactly the same like a HomePod since the iPad has to be plugged in at all times for that feature too. I use it for one thing only: to toggle my bedroom lamp.

you dont use it. it uses you.
not unless you have a libreboot-ed laptop with void linux and no cell phone.

I liek to read and draw stuff. Neither of those things are pleasant to do on a computer or a phone, at least not as pleasant as on a tablet.

>never used a galaxy note or paper

>never used a galaxy note
I have and both the display and stylus are too small to be used comfortably. It's like trying to draw on a Nintendo DS. It can be done, but it's not optimal.
Note is convenient for quickly signing a document here and there but not particularly great for drawing anything other than stick figures.
>or paper
Can't undo. Ephemeral, not everlasting. Smudges if not stored in great conditions. Easily destroyed. Clunky for drawing in public. User needs to store several different types of utensils (e.g. pastels, pencils, brushes, airbrushes, various types of pens) if they want any variety. Can't draw in layers nor rearrange those layers later.

Tablets when in this scenario. Hands-down.
Sure, you can use your laptop to draw via a plastic USB plugin tablet but I prefer to draw directly on the surface I'm looking at. And drawing tablets with screens that mirror your computer's display are too clunky and often have a parallax issue, a gap between the pen itself and the surface you're drawing on. Plus they're often super expensive and you can't take them out in public.
iPads and Surfaces win in this area.

>prefers to draw and read on a screen smaller than an index card
>prefers to carry one single book around with him rather than hundreds of thousands in a smaller form factor
yuck, no thanks

It's got a much better microphone.

Wake up to Alex transmitting to creepy crackling beeps that cut out after a few seconds at a time after listening to UVB-76 creepypastas

dead ass they just make to be dope alarm clocks, if you get a nest it becomes useful if youre a lazy fuck but other than that the alarm feature is the best since usually itll wake you up tell you about the weather and a small amount of news.

>wake up in middle of night
>Alexa crackles and says "Go back to sleep" in a hoarse New York accent

I have a Google home, I've used it to play Despacito.

Ur an idiot if you think all paper smudges.

A bit old, but relevant

I whisper into it when I masturbate to keep me company, because I know somebody is listening on the other side.
Then kiss it good night.

Tablets are useless shit. I had one for a year and fucking hated it so I gave it to my mom. She doesn't use it either.

Fuck smart home spy bots too.

What did you even use your tablet for? I find myself using mine more than I use my laptop actually.

when my laptop died I used it as my daily PC until I could build a new system. Since then, nothing.

Play bestiality porn on it, tape it to a brick and throw it at my neighbor's window.
