People who think Jow Forums is edgy at all probably base that impression upon their experiences with /b/ or Jow Forums. Jow Forums probably seems edgier when you first start using it but you gradually become desensitized. It's also possible that the oldfags who were once teens posting on /b/ eventually grew up and decided that being mean and edgy and purpose wasn't fun anymore.

/b/ has always had at least some porn on it. But it's no longer a "random" board. It's pretty easy to predict what kind of threads you're going to find on there if you do happen to go there.
I remember when you used to find interesting threads on there all the time, like pic related. I actually screenshotted that myself.
You can still find funny and interesting threads like that on /b/, but it's just that the board is so watered down with cuck, trap and loli threads that they're hard to find.
