jews and board layouts. memory like hbm can't be upgradable. it has to be fused to the interposer and directly connected to the core. its one of the reasons why it provide so much bandwidth.
gddr* is layed out the way it is because of maximizing shorter trace routes. for improved performance and latency. to have it upgradeable would mean it needs to have its own socket and the socket would have to be placed far away to not interfere with the cooler and everything else on the board. its just better to have it soldered on in an efficient layout.
