mpv is great but I never got why anyone would use it stand-alone when there's GUIs like smplayer for it.

I never found a reason to use a GUI since everything I want I can do with mpv alone

i had one of these before i knew it was a thing and I started seeing them all the time on movies/tv shows, etc.... why are these so popular?

Mpv is nice for watching animuh where some baka set a shitty ass dub as the default audio track. Unlike other players mpv will, when you open multiple files, always stay on the audio and sub track with the same number as the one you selected in the last file when playing the next one.
