A nice way to check which distro is really, REALLY stable is to pick the one they use in space, where no tech support person can come to fix it right away. It just has to work.

Slackware period. Even -current is more stable than most others.

but all linux distros are quite stable really, what isn't stable is most GUIs.

sorry but they are right, Arch is much stable than Debian. Every two years distros have a big upgrade and switching from one version to another kills your install or breaks it, i experienced it with debian and it was terrible but with Arch im rolling the same install for 3 years and nothing happened besides some program adding or deprecating config options, lately i had to downgrade avr-gcc just went to the Arch archive downloaded the 3 dependencies and done.
