Finally got the Atom. Everything sounds way more detailed, especially the bass, and Ss and TS aren't nearly as harsh. Mind you, this is in comparison to the STXII's default opamps. If there's something that irks me though is the fact that trumpets sometimes seem to get drowned. I guess it might be from being used to the STXII. Anyway, the Atom seems to be worth it.

STX is an excellent AMP/DAC and there's no audible difference between two good AMPs unless you go for tubes. This sounds either like a post-purchase rationalization or your Atom actually muddying the sound.

I like the bass on my DT 1990, it's tight and punchy but doesn't drown mids and highs like a mudslide. I've got niggerbass cans like X2 and DT 770 and even though I enjoy good impact, DT 1990 sounds more refined to me, and their bass doesn't increase my melanin levels.
I'd like to try DT 1770 and some Fostex though.
