how can I convince my dad to install a newer windows than xp on our computer? our computer is painfully slow and I think a new windows would help with that, but he has all types of boomer arguments against that, like "xp is still the best, a lot of people who work with computers still use it" or "windows 10 is like a surveillance device"

XP can't match most Linux distros. Sure, user familiarity is a thing, but many Linux distros are better at supporting privacy (pretty easy reasonably good isolation of programs with firejail, for example, never mind by simply not having a botnet EULA/privacy policy) and better at supporting hardware and being a platform to run software on.

BTW various Linux distros do run good on old / low end computers. Windows 10 isn't the worst performance wise, but it is definitely not as slim as XP or many Linux distros. In most situations, it will be slower than XP on older hardware.
Grab Etcher and try MX Linux or Mint Cinnamon or something.

one time at a former workplace, i was tasked with installing XP on a bunch of netbooks for temporary use the only requirements was that they run skype and firefox i threw together ubuntu with an XP theme (this was back when ubuntu used gnome2), and managed to convince my boss that buying a bunch of XP licenses wasn't necessary didn't get any complaints, so i guess nobody even noticed
