i will have my hypothetical kids use linux systems and i will instruct them how to use them, but i don't really care if they take up a hobby/interest in computers. i'd probably just put ubuntu or something on because it's "safe" and i wouldn't have time to tinker around anymore anyway

Look at Windows, most users don't know anything about their OS, they only know the familiarity of a GUI, and how to download the latest meme "Registry System Cleaner Pro".
