I use expressVPN but I got a deal during a promotion on it. It passes all IP leak, DNS leak, and WebRTC checks I've done. Don't know how much more secure you need than that.

When your VPN is free, you are the product and you have anything but security cause of the ip leaks and your data being sold to third party companies .You are better off not using one at all if its going to be "free", a couple of $$ every month for your privacy isn't that big of a deal.

Setting up your own VPN is the best idea. Why would you even use a 3rd party service?
For you guys using Tor, at least consider using bridges.
