Got this for free yesterday.

Sup guys my laptop finally kicked the bucket so I want to buy a thinkpad, I was thinking about getting the T440 as my budget is ~180€. Would you recommend anything else? I am a mech eng student so I'll be using autocad and doing some coding/light surfing, also should I get it from ebay? Im in europe (Spain) btw

Attached: 17904106_1879818578923347_3442439882875815012_n.jpg (960x960, 100K)

Would it be possibru to place an x230 mobo into the x240 - are the mounting points the same?

Why would you do that the x240 is better

Narrowed my choice between two models which I plan on using for some light gaming and having around to mess around with when I wake up in bed. Is there any big difference in the w530 and the w540? The 30 id get the k2000m gpu and they are both i7s

W540 = worse display, worse trackpad (you can buy one for like 10 dollars from T540/T440 and switch it) but can have newer quadcore processor:
4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4930
MX (Up to 3.9GHz, 8MB L3, 1600MHz FSB)
4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4900MQ (Up to 3.8GHz, 8MB L3, 1600MHz FSB)
4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4810MQ (Up to 3.8GHz, 6MB L3, 1600MHz FSB)
4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4800MQ (Up to 3.7GHz, 6MB L3, 1600MHz FSB)
4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ (Up to 3.4GHz, 6MB L3, 1600MHz FSB)
4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4600MQ (Up to 3.6GHz, 4MB L3, 1600MHz FSB)

as opposed to the W530, which i7 is it?

Just got an x250 with a 1080 touch screen, 8GB, bl keyboard, fingerprint reader in grade A condition for £250.

Delivering soon, I'm excited to upgrade from my shitty L440 lads

The w450 would be the 4800mq

Yeah then I'd say go for the W540 and switch the trackpad with a T550 one if you care.

I'm really having a dilemma here.. posted in the last thread.. I have an X220 and an X230 and want to install macOS and Windows. Just not sure what to install on which. Please help..
strawpoll.me/17242241

Is it worth upgrading from an x220 to an x230 or something newer? I use it as a daily driver but it’s starting to show some age

Which Recommended Thinkpads have Numpads on their keyboards?

The T5** usually.

Why would anyone get anything but a workstation model? More power and they generally all sorta feel the same

Amending that, beginning with the T540p.

Looking at dankpads.com, it says Haswell has "lolcow" performance, compared to Ivy Bridge's "bretty gud" performance. I can't tell if the author is using "lolcow" in a positive or negative way.

Should I shoot for a Third Generation over a Fourth Generation and live without a numpad?

Ivy Bridge is still relevant today, but I don't see why Haswell would be worse. It's at least as good as Ivy Bridge.

>It's at least as good as Ivy Bridge.
Out of curiosity, is this true for every succeeding generation of Intel Processors?

every generation is a little better, if someone says otherwise they're probably comparing wrong class of processors, yes 4 core HQ ivy bridge is better than 2 core ulv haswell but that isn't a fair comparison

Some gens didn't improve much in terms of pure performance, but rather performance per watt. It would catastrophic from a marketing point of view if that wasn't the case.

Haswell is slightly worse than Ivybridge in terms of raw performance, as a compromise for being significantly more power-efficient ...

X201 < X240 < X220 = X250 < X230 = X260 < X270 < X280

Comparison sourced from the "best performance" i7 CPUs, btw... it may be true that, for example, an i7 X240 is faster than an i5-2520M X220

nvm, remembered the data wrong, it's actually:
X201 < X220=X240 < X230=X250 < X260 < X270

(pic taken from a google sheet that hiro won't let me post the link to)

Attached: Screenshot_20190116_090252.png (922x137, 22K)

If you are focused on performance, make sure to get a model with a MQ processor. They are full (laptop) powered chips with all their cores. The U series processors are very efficient, but not very fast.
I have a T440P and it chews through all processing tasks with ease.

You may not want to lug around a sizeable "workstation" laptop, and at that size they're not good to use on your lap.

>use t400 as a main computer every day for 2-3y
>start hearing noise in headphones when power draw changes
is this the end guy?

Attached: 1547594486898.jpg (737x556, 139K)

My poor T430 has a bad screen cable: it displays these little columns, if the lid is in certain positions or I move the table, making the whole thing vibrate.
So I must buy a new one, but I'm in Europe. Should I try to get one from AliExpress? Where else could I find one?

Are DTK batteries okay?

What brand should I go with?

I have a ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (FRU 04Y2071) and I happen to have multiple power supplies lying around for it. Which one is the correct one to use? I want to clean up the house a bit. On the back it says:
>Type 4338 20V 4.5A

A (FRU 45N0306)
>INPUT - 100-240V~1.5A 50-60Hz
>OUTPUT - 20V 4.25 A

B (FRU 45N0310)
>INPUT - 100-240 VAC 1.2 A max 50-60 Hz
>OUTPUT - 20 V 4.25 A

Just typed it out as I saw it. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but it feels more suitable to ask here rather than the stupid questions thread.

cant you get a new cable desu

Attached: 1544800187610.jpg (508x382, 37K)

I'm not sure but the first one has a higher input amps rating, might as well use that one
maybe, but integrated headphone connector has always been shitty on my Thinkpads
can confirm, T440p is very good and much better than the W520

What kind of adapter do I need to connect HDD/SSD to the eSATA port on the thinkpads?

Attached: Tomiokasenas-Unstoppable-Oppai-Ero-Gallery-17.jpg (635x800, 52K)

Gonna be receiving an X220 tablet soon to accompany my T530

Just get the T420. The T440 has an awful trackpad and the shitty island style keyboard. Also the T420 will be significantly cheaper and you can upgrade the screen/get an SSD with the money you safe.

Get a T440P not the T440, and make sure it has an nvidia card too; integrated GPU like on older models, or anything without a dedicated card won't cut it for CAD stuff

ebay.co.uk/itm/SATA-CD-DVD-ROM-Drive-to-SSD-HDD-Hard-Driver-Adapter-Converter-For-12-7mm/352018453349

uwu nice desu

Is the ThinkPad P1 a good buy (what's the battery life like)? What's the battery life like on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon with 4K screen? Are the Lenovo ThinkPads any good or was ThinkPad only good under IBM?

that's for the optical drive, which I already have, I meant for the e-sata port.

Should I go with
>$100 for a T420 that might be 1600x900 and may come with an SSD
>$110 for a T420 that I know is 1600x900 but doesn't include a charger
>neither

i thought the dvd drive is esata, do you mean the msata port?

This port is e-Sata

Don't hoard things you don't need

Anyone know where I'd find a clearer version of this image? I think it dates back to 2003-4

Attached: Screenshot from 2019-01-16 16-09-13.png (239x183, 31K)

What? I'm not hoarding anything. This would be my first ThinkPad

oh wew never seen that before kek

message the seller of the top one and ask the screen res

>cant you get a new cable desu
That's what I'd like to do, I was just wondering where I could find it.
I also imagine a cable for HD+ (1600x900) won't do for my HD (1366x768) screen and I seem to only find HD+ cable on ali. A complete panel upgrade too would probably be excessive. Do you know where I can find a HD cable?

if you call lelnovo they should be able to give you numbers of the companies that stock thinkpad parts im pretty sure they will have them despite the machine being old, they should be able to tell you the correct part as well. Even if they dont have them they should be able to track them down

They have multiple available. Based on the serial number the one in the pictures originally came with the 1600x900 and SSD. The description says 128GB HD which is the size of the SSD that came with it so I'm hoping they just don't know the difference

i can't imagine the a hd cable being much cheaper than hd+ plus cable. there like 4 bucks man

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

bsg guy uwu

Thanks for the input :) I'll dig into it

Meanwhile I think I found the right cable on ebay (ebay.it/itm/IBM-LENOVO-T420-T420i-T430-T430i-LCD-HD-1366X768-SCREEN-CABLE-04W1617-3YRS-WAR/302767978201?hash=item467e60b6d9:g:JNgAAOSwC19bHlym:rk:5:pf:0&shqty=1#shId).
And now I'm also thinking about a HD+ screen upgrade described on the wiki. I plan on using this machine for a long time anyway, is the difference really noticable for programming?

It's not about price, but availability and making it work

I just got a really cute Dell E4300 for free. Admittedly broken, but I've since fixed it.
Is this lil guy roughly equivalent to an X220? I was planning on getting one but now I've got the Dell it seems very similar.

Attached: E4300.jpg (500x375, 72K)

>Dell E4300
uwu just looked it up on yt looks like a nice machine desu. Whats wrong with it?

Is debian xfce the best just werks distro for an older thinkpad? I need something stable for college

Nothing at all, just thinking that if it's equivalent to the X220 then there's no need to spring for the ThinkPad.
My only criticisms so far are the non socketed CPU and slightly uneven backlight, but the extremely nice keyboard and trackpoint make up for it.

well the one i saw on youtube had a core 2 duo so its miles away from an x220 kek

amazon.com/CHENYANG-eSATAp-Power-ESATA-Combo/dp/B00IR4OGP6/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&qid=1547657405&sr=8-23&keywords=esata cable
In addition to that, you'd need something like a molex power supply since eSATA doesn't supply power:
amazon.com/Coolerguys-100-240v-Molex-Adapter-Switch/dp/B07GFSGQTG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1547657600&sr=8-3&keywords=molex power supply

As you can see, that whole setup is quite cumbersome which is why eSATA never really took off. My recommendation would be (if your TP has USB 3) to just get one of those all-inclusive hard drive docks, that have their own wall power adapter and then just connect to a USB 3.0 port. You slide the hard drive in the top like a SNES cartridge.

amazon.com/iDsonix-Drive-Docking-Station-Cable/dp/B00FDLCTQO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1547657875&sr=8-4&keywords=hard drive dock

Thinkpad newfag here, I am torn between buying two models, both used:
X220 12.5" IPS (with minor spot on the display), 8 gigs of ram for $155
OR
T420 14" matte display, 4 gigs of ram, for $187

Should I go for the T420 model and replace the display for an IPS one? Also any particular details I should ask the seller about?

Attached: 1545425985367.png (432x454, 268K)

Go with Xubuntu if you like xfce.
Ubuntu is generally the distro you want for "just werks" purposes. 90% of the time when you want to do something there's already a guide or simple "apt install *program*".

hd+ cable works on a 1366X768 panel,

Nice! I didn't know that. Thank you

X280 was announced Jan 2018. Any news on X290?

Yes, debian just werks, as for DE try KDE.
It's 2019, most thinkpads can handle it, and you get KDE Connect as well.

Every generation corresponds to a new processor line-up, and Intel is still stuck on 8, so don't count on it.

The 6-year-old battery on my X230 is rapidly losing capacity. Should I get an original one for $100, a chink one for $35, or try to repack mine? Do Lenovo's batteries have controllers that self-destruct if you try to replace the cells?

x290 will probably have refreshed 8th gen 8265u and 8565u which have higher turbo clocks which look on paper to be impossible to sustain, I wouldn't hold my breath for those

My x220 is borked: giving me the beep code for bad memory on startup even when I put in ram sticks that work fine in other systems. I’m too stupid to figure out what the problem is myself and really need a laptop as a collegefag, so I’m thinking about just splurging on something new. I’ve been looking at the thinkpad e485, anybody have any experience with it? I welcome any other suggestions for a relatively cheap machine, or tips on what I can do with the thing I have

Thanks for the reply, I have this
amazon.com/AGPtek-Drive-Adapter-Converter-External/dp/B00BIE996S
But I'm afraid to use it after reading the reviews, how safe are those molex PSU?
Also do I need PSU if I'm using 2.5" SSD/HDD?

the price of 9 good quality cells will probably be the same as an original battery

The sustained performance on 8250U/8550U is basically limited by cooling, hell, 8250U is faster in some laptops than 8550 in others. So if Lenovo retains the same cooler, I'd expect the difference to be in single digit percentages, if any.

the best I could do with 8550u in t480s is stable 3.3ghz in a 1 hour sustained workload and 3.7ghz is all core theoretical max if cooling isn't an issue, and for reference 8565u is rated at 4.6ghz single core turbo so I have no idea what they're thinking

Mine is a 6-cell, and six decent quality 18650 cells are like $20.
The problem is the controller, I heard that it's not enough just to replace the cells.

It's a chink power supply which are notoriously shit.
Put a multimeter to the leads and see what voltages it's pushing.

Is this a one-off thing to get data off a drive, or are you going to be regularly connecting to stuff?

kek i wanna know where you're getting good cells at less than 5 dollars each, also most likely it will

Is this a good idea

Attached: Screenshot_2019-01-16-12-53-48-204_com.android.chrome.png (1080x1920, 471K)

One off thing, I have an old IDE drive, I want to get the data from it.
I was thinking the faster I'm done with it the better and less likely to get housefire.

Honestly just connect it to a desktop's PSU. If you're only doing it once it's not a big deal to dig to have the case open and the drive connected, and way easier than trying to recover data off of a drive that's been cooked by a shitty chink PSU.

The mobo is dead, the mobo of another desktop isn't compatible.
The old drive have Win95 on it.

/csg/ Liitokala sells various kinds of rebranded batteries for $3-6 a piece. I've ordered quite a lot of cells from them and so far never been chinked with capacity. (Can't comment on high current cells as I've never used them at >3A)

Attached: IMAG1905.jpg (5376x3024, 2.95M)

Connect it to the power supply of the desktop with the dead motherboard.
Then use the adapter to connect the drive to working computer.

>0 feedback
>unbelievably low prices
If you want to give them your info it is a good idea.

I heard bad reviews about x240. Is x250 an improvement?

X240 has an awful clickpad, but it's fixable by transplanting the clickpad from X250.

>rebranded batteries
kek if you're doing a cell swap you should get some fresh samsung cells not old used ones that fell off the back of a truck

what are these mobos for x220?

Probably about modifying the bios.

Nice! ...but also slightly worrying.

Convince me not to install ElementaryOS on my newly bought used X1 carbon

Just the large one on the right is. The rest are x200t's. Trying to find my clip so I can pull bios rom from the x220 to try to get one of my others working. I cant find it though.

Attached: 1530963405276-a.jpg (338x489, 96K)

Rebranded, not refurbished. They're literally Sanyos, Samsungs and Panasonics with stickers. Seemingly genuine too, as fakes usually have like half the advertised capacity.

Well I'm not sure the old PSU isn't faulty as well.
As desktop is old like 1994 old.
