As a webdev that's labeled software engineer now, it depends.

Back in college I would work for a company that does contract work for simple webapps. That was mostly just webdev shit. You lay out some simple database schemas, write your CRUD restful api for these, while presenting mockups and prototypes to the client. Then at the end of several months you have a working product.

Doing that for awhile got me a job at a large company and now I just only do front end shit, except it's many times more complex. We are writing our own dashboarding/charting libraries because highcharts and plotly just can't handle the amount of data we need visualized in one viewport. It's good to know a bit of CS to do this stuff. Turns out binary trees and quadtrees are good for knowing which lines of the chart your cursor is hovering over.

I was always interested in IT but being a retarded kid I got a political degree.
Applied for alot of jobs after graduating , got one as a support engineer in a software company.They were pretty short on people and released a pile of shit software that month. After 3 month of working my hardest the dev team behind a new product requested a QA team to be assembled since the product core was already built. I got offered the job and after 3 more month promoted to a full time QA. Kept asking for interesting tasks (like testing the API and the engine directly and not just click GUI buttons chaotically) and when the product shipped they only left one QA to maintain a project , I was moved to a project where I maintained my own IT infrastructure and helped the dev team of 3 guys build an SDK for a client. Still soft of a QA guy , but with alot more say in how things are done. Finally two month ago I got offered to get promoted to a junior DevOps and I've been learning it's ways since.

So in a span of a year and a half I went from retard political grad to support to QA to DevOps.

yeah, I got a retard degree too. Started manual QA, learned how to do Automation. Now I'm working on a pet project in Unity for my boss for work. Not sure how long it'll last but they already want a DevOps and I've expressed interest so I'll just move to that once the project concludes.

I've actually learned ten time more new information doing DevOps for 2 month then doing QA for a year.

Very interesting and helpful stuff if you got a good mentor.Mine doesn't really teach me anything. Simply tooses me to the devs and let's me figgure out how to do stuff on my own.

Just the other week I had to migrate a whole ass project from svn to git while keeping all the commit history and not breaking the teamcity CI... I didn't even know what svn was desu bit within a day of googling and devs yelling asking when they can finally push their code I managed to pull that off

I'm lucky enough to be in a 3rd world shithole where people think computers are devices operated by ancient magic, so its pretty easy to charge american tier rates an hour to teach someone MS Word or Java

Some fuckoff job for some small business tyrant that's dumb enough to not realize all you're doing is googling shit and sitting on the phone with customer support but smart enough to realize that they don't want to do any of that.

As a lot of others are saying; helpdesk. I doen require you to be tech literate, but nothing too crazy. The real killer for me is answering calls and talking/working with the customer directly.

The real bread and butter is being a tier 2 IT support. Usually don't have to deal with the customer directly. You obviously need to know more than the helpdesk (tier 1) but if you land a good gig with good coworkers, its hella comfy.

What's a good IT job to get if I'm in the air force as a sys admin and have a Top Secret clearance and access to $4500 towards exam vouchers for certs. No idea what I should work on. Already have Sec+ and trying to start studying for my CCNA. Should I focus on something else?

My position allows me to choose whatever certs (or continuing education) and they'll pay for up to $1500 of it. Certs are valuable not only in the resume flair but the knowledge learned as well. I've got my A+, a few weeks from taking my N+, then I'll do Security+ then either CEH or CCNA. It's nice when a company invests in it's workers.

Help/Service desk is not an easy job at my company. Those guys are taking live chats, phone calls, working on tickets and emails all at the same time. It's insane, they are supporting over 50+ types of software on a wide variety of machines. From printers to switches to a mouse that won't work. Those guys combine multitasking with customer service and ocassionally bare getting yelled at by frustrated people. Fuckers are heros. They make my job look like peanut butter pie.. peanut butter oreo pie...

I'm a Linux sysadmin for a small company. It's not too bad, once you learn the basics you have a really solid foundation to keep learning more. It pays the bills. Every day I praise dog that I do not work with Windows.

You will struggle to get a sysadmin gig without helpdesk or other entry level experience. Even if you think you know your stuff companies won't trust you. Personally I went for an IT degree and did my time as helpdesk working for my alma mater. You'll develop a lot of important office and customer service skills doing it.

Above all else keep in mind companies trust you with the keys to the kingdom. If you prove you can't handle that your career is basically ruined. Don't do anything stupid.
