Laptops with ryzen, hai or nai...

laptops with ryzen, hai or nai? been thinking about getting 2500u but ive read amd drivers are shit and overall intel+nvidia is better. what does Jow Forums think?

Wait for zen3 laptops

wait for zen4 laptops

This and laptops in general will always offer poor gaymen performance due to limite thermal solution constraints.

Why not do a mini-itx build instead OP? Rx 580s are like $200 and a ryzen 2600X CPU is more than enough

As far as I'm concerned, nvidia drivers are almost unusably awful. I did have some issues with raven ridge drivers in earlier kernels, but the later ones are fine.

I bought one but returned it due to a graphical glitch that inverted my colors randomly. Apparently said glitch was fixed by AMD but Dell hadn't released a driver update. This problem had been around for months but still no fix by Dell, and I couldn't install from AMD.

Gaming and thermal performance was good for the price, but I didn't want to be cucked by an OEM not releasing drivers again(had a Intel graphics issue with HP that never got fixed).

Nah barely any improvement over Zen 3
Has slow ass lddr5
T. 202x time travler
Why? Zen 2 won't be much slower there's only so many gains amd. Can get out of it and we are stuck with 7nn euv for. A while
Don't get a laptop
Trust me at every lan and every one I've owned overheats throttles and has stupid io/expansion and other dumb issues.
Software and drivers are the least of your problems and unlike hardware issues will be fixed in time.
As of right now fuck no wait for Zen 2 mobile next year
Laptops are dead Asus tried to put the mobo on the screen side and the bottom is just a keyboard it might be better for cooling so just wait it out.
Get a cheap used r7 rig for now
If you absolutely need something now don't buy Intel ffs
This

amd have universal drivers now.
no need to wait for oem.

its for travel purposes, and its not 2-3 days but more than half a year. monitor would only get in my way

Then you're shit out of luck. Unless you spend like $2,000+ for a 10KG 27" gaymen laptop then expect shit performance.

well youtube says 2500u with vega 8 is not that bad. i saw game tests of every game i need and its always 30-60 fps. and thats for less than $700. that said, im still not sure

Wait... 7nm is zen2? So 12nm is zen+?
If so, I fucking hate when they do this

what everyone disregards about the 2500U is the hyperthreading

It's a cluster fuck I guess 7nm euv will be? Zen 2+

im gonna run some virtual machines on it, should i worry?

i think the more threads you have, the better for vm's right?

i have fx 6300 on pc and im pleased with its performance, if its as good then im ok

it still hurts bros

At medium 720p settings maybe. Once you get to 1080p ultra you're gonna need an RX 580 at minimum if you want 60 FPS. AMD's APU tech sounds good on paper but long term you'll get less than PS4 performance which is pretty bad already.

There is 1 possible alternative:

simplynuc.com/hades-canyon/

This is basically the smallest highest performance desktop-grade computer possible right now. Smaller than a laptop but thicker. You can VESA mount this on the back of a a thin small ~24" monitor and use wireless/bluetooth keyb/mouse combo and chug all that in a shoulderbag/suitcase.

It's 80% as portable as a laptop but has desktop level performance 70% close to a 2600X + Rx 580 combo.

>1080p
>laptop
well yeah, laptops come with 1080p now but i dont really care about it on 15' screen

Right but what I'm saying is they'll struggle even more at 1080. Even a 2700U will struggle to low 1080p gaymen. The skull nuc won't.

I snapped the hinge on my current laptop so I wanted to get a ryzen thinkpad
fucking sad how it took this long to release it
too close to their new shit

Attached: 1454363848912.png (348x288, 136K)

it all comes down to needs. for some gaymen means current year games, but for others its just team fortress

Owner of a A485 with 7 PRO 2700U
It truly is a piece of shit. But it's all due to bad drivers.

Performance is plenty for office / cad and 3D modelling as long as you're not rendering or gaming.

why is it shit, if it works as intended though?

My friend just got a ryzen laptop. 2600U i think? Anyway she tried running minecraft windows 10 edition and it performed worse than my gf’s old surface pro 3 with i5. Sorta confused by this because I built an HTPC with ryzen 2200G and it was much more powerful than the surface pro 3.

It's a laptop. As long as the drivers can handle fullscreen video and, maybe, games from C. 2010 you're golden. You weren't thinking of maxing Assassins' Creed: Bix Nood 4 on a laptop, were you?

the surface pro probably ran the pocket edition of minecraft

minecraft is a really bad benchmark btw

Random BSODs, screen blackouts, hanging programs etc. It comes in waves so there are good and bad days.

sounds like a windows problem

??? We used Windows 10 Edition for every machine??? How else would we play with each other lol

>low settings 720p
>res scale set to 65%
>still can't maintain 60 fps
I didn't know it was THAT bad. Dam AMD, u don goofed.

I'm waiting for zen2 laptops.

Well, for IGP it's quite good. Even better than Intel counterpart

you mean, its 100% playable on integrated gpu? how about you post intel based laptop doing the same?

>low settings
>sub-720p native rendering resolution
>playable
I mean I liked playing games on my psp too but that was when I was in middle school.

well, im still waiting for intel based setup doing better for the same price

Some are good like the hp envy x360, Huawei matebook D, and Lenovo ideapad 330 (not the 330s, it has soldered single channel ram whoch severely hampers the gpu).
Most are not good. The 2500u is a great chip; most laptop manufacturers cut corners and shit is overpriced and shitty.

>15w chip vs 95w/125w chip
its performance is better than equivalent i5-8250u. But I doubt it would match a desktop processor.

Fuck off incel shill

Linux doesn't have this problem

those are just manufacturer models, they all have ryzen 2500u variants. envy x360 has nice tablet mode gimmick while lenovo 330 is cheaper, if not the cheapest laptop. this thread is not about that

You know fps takes a hit when you are recording, right?

That has an AMD GPU 500% more powerful than the shitty onboard iGPU on the 2500u you mong.

What would you rather have:
40 FPS at low 720p settings
or
40 fps at ultra 1080p settings

Relive uses the GPU to record gameplay footage and only drops fps by 5-10%.

Its not a gaming laptop. For battlefield 5. Its so idiots trying to play Fortnite, league, Minecraft, can still do it, and so people like me can play into the breach, rainworld, hyperlight drifter, serious sam hd, ut2k4, starcraft 2, bioshock 2, and emulate up through gamecube with no issue.
It's a low power portable ultrabook style chip. It's not a gaming laptop chip. If you want to do gaming on a laptop, a dedicated GPU will generally perform better due to thermals and power delivery rather than an SoC. On top of that, I tend to find i5-8250u laptops with nvidia mx150 GPU for lower price than 2500u/vega8 and while they should perform similarly, the mx150 generally does better because they can give it more power.

Anyway if you want a GAMING laptop you need to get a processor that's 45W or so, like an i5-8300H or i7-8750H, but understand that most laptops are SHIT and the 8th gen 6 core i5/i7s actually perform worse in games than the 7th gen i5/i7 7700HQ because of overheating, thermal limits, etc. 6 cores tskes more power than 4 and if all you need is single threaded performance for shit games, yeah.

Anyway tldr go buy a dell 7567 with a gtx 1060 in it, or a mech-g2 if you have the money

Depends entirely on what your vms are doing. Fast storage and ram are usually a lot more important.

thats opinion i was looking for. will check out that intel setup

basically porn station. kubuntu, browsing internet and watching videos in smplayer lol

Then it doesn't really matter. I ran 5 vms with i5 2400 some months ago. They mostly idled, so didn't matter even if all of them had 2 vCPUs assigned to them.

>1080p ultra
>on laptop
I guess if you wanna lug around a "laptop" the size of a suitcase...

Personally at the moment (where I live at least) there are more Intel laptops for sale than AMD ones. I have an AMD Ryzen 3 1300X processor in my main computer and my laptops have Intel Pentium or i3 processors in them with the one exception being my Sony Vaio netbook which has a AMD E2 processor.

I prefer Intel CPUs when it comes to laptops because you get more for your money whereas with Desktop CPUs Intel are bit more pricey.

Before AMD Ryzen I wasn't at all interested in AMD. I know this because when I found out about Ryzen I was made aware of their FX-Series of CPUs (I hadn't even heard of the FX range prior to knowing about Ryzen).

It's 2019. GPUs have been used for video recording for several generations now

>there are more Intel laptops for sale than AMD ones

I like AMD a lot but almost all gaming laptops with AMD hardware are gimped in some way, even the insane acer predator helios 500 with a Ryzen 2700 and Vega 56 is arguably not worth buying over the one running the i9-8950HK and GTX 1070.
Most of the lower end shit is total garbage from both sides, hence why the Dell G3 / 7567 is basically as low as you can go for anything remotely viable
The 1050 2gb and 4gb are both dogshit
the 1050ti 4gb is passable but a 1060 is about 2x as good as that, for not that much more.
that said, don't buy an mx150 setup, it's 1/2 as good as a 1050, which is way worse than even a 1060-max-q

>envy x360
>16:9
>stupid shallow keyboard
why do people do this
At least they have a pen for it.

>envy x360
>16:9
>stupid shallow keyboard
every laptop ever

Attached: x360.jpg (3916x2584, 3.44M)

not really, definetly laptops below the gtx 1080-1070 mark(dunno what it's gonna be for rtx cards) offer almost equal performance to their desktop counterparts

>every laptop ever
Well, more like almost every laptop after ~2008 but now they're starting to make 3:2 sometimes. Anyways, fuck this fucking gay shit. It seems I'll have to stock up on cum-stained Thinkpads for a life-time supply.

RYZEN WAS FIXED AGES AGO
NOBODY EVER SAID TO USE NVIDIA WITH LINUX, NEVER
FUCK OFF WITH THIS SHIY BAIT

Ryzen makes for a great mobile CPU and Vega is far more decent than Intel iGPU. The cheap 600 yuro Ryzen ThinkPads really are Gods gift.

I really want the envy x360 13, but it still seems gimped due to throttling.

Got a Lenovo yoga 530 yesterday and an Acer Aspire 3, both with the 2500u. The latter ran fine with the latest kernel, got to put gentoo on the other still. There's some fuckery with boot parameters involved though.

Oh good, thought it's because my hardware is faulty on my brand new laptop, which already crashed thrice in 24 hours. Well, let's put a sensible OS on that thing.

That's with 15 watts of TDP. That's actually quite impressive. Of course, if you want more, you need more power, as in electricity.

I've bought a HP 15" laptop with 2500u and a 1366x768 screen.

720p looks fine on it, better than it would on a FHD screen, also doens't distort low res content too much, like emulators and Diablo 2 (800x600) which I play religiously every year.

ryzen3X APUs are not due until like May 2020

Based.

>Why not do a mini-itx build instead OP? Rx 580s are like $200 and a ryzen 2600X CPU is more than enough

Or you could get Rx580 + R7-1700 in laptop form
amazon.com/Gaming-FreeSync-Display-Editing-GL702ZC/dp/B077GBJCNC

Or upgrade to a R7-2700 and Vega 56 laptop
amazon.com/Acer-Predator-PH517-61-R0GX-Processor-Graphics/dp/B07GWX5X26/

so ive found hp 2500u 16gb ram, 240 ssd m.2, 1t hdd, for ~$660

Shit, go for $550 matebook D at that price point

This I have the matebook D and it's the perfect college machine super portable and good battery life.

kys weeb

>i5-8250u laptops with nvidia mx150 GPU for lower price than 2500u/vega8
thats not the case for me. that setup with 8gb ram is the same price as ryzen with 16gb ram

Consider buying Ryzen laptop if you're open-source fan, since AMD actually has open drivers and support them, in contrast to Nvidia. Regarding performance, they're a little behind Intel+Nvidia laptops, but have lower TDP. If you want a laptop for really light gaming, that might work.

i have a 2700u
it uses 15 watts so battery life is good
its just a cpu the end user experience isnt really different in any way to intel, how would it be?
also they havent been out long enough to tell if drivers support is bad
