Is SteamOS a good distro if I the only thing I'm going to use it for is gaming?
Is SteamOS a good distro if I the only thing I'm going to use it for is gaming?
nope
What would you recommend then? I also want to configure it to boot directly to Steam and not have any kind of desktop interface.
i don't think you'll get straight answer here. although steamos is based on ubuntu if i'm not mistaken anons here loathe gaming so you're better off trying it yourself. if you do not intend on using it as a desktop machine then it may be worth it.
Nay.
Like most things nu-valve attempts, it's a complete disaster.
just use ubuntu and you can auto launch steam when you login if you really want to.
SteamOS doesn’t even boot straight into steam
Debian, not Ubuntu
use wincuck for that with those settings in steam
The performance is worse than windows, but if you really want to play games and have a free operating system steamOS is the best choice out of the box. Other distros can most likely get the same performance, but you'll need to do some tweaking with drivers and such.
Is this even maintained anymore?
>steam machine
>steamOS
>steam controller
>steam link
What went wrong?
If only for gaming, then it's ok.
Resolution will be capped to 1920x1200 though, and a lot of dependencies and repos miss for the fact that it wasn't thought as a desktop os.
Also based on Debian 8.
Do I recommend it after my experience? Not really. You could configure an ubuntu with steam to open in big picture, single thing is good about it is about drivers
It's over steamcuck
PC will be absorbed by Xbox
>I bought a link and controller
Its a shame cause there's some cool shit you can do with the controller (albeit flawed) and the link is useful if you're into that sorta thing. Also mirin the digits
>steam controller
I bought one and promptly sent it back. Uncomfortable as fuck.
Use whatever distro that you can setup for GPU passthrough. Arch distros like Manjaro or plain Arch are easiest I think and have guides. If you can't do it then just install Win10 LTSC and dual boot for gaymin.
Steam link is nice, cheapest way to watch porn from pc on my upstairs tv.
it's no better than any other distro
if all you are doing is gaming, just install windows. who cares if the botnet knows about your futa skyrim mods
fuck off weeb
ubuntu is honestly your best bet. You can install steam and set it to run in big picture mode and turn on when your computer boots.
>gaming
>linux
SteamOS is basically just Debian with Steam and some drivers pre-installed.
>spent days setting this up over many different distros with various issues only to end up with everything perfect except audio crackling
>the common "solution" was to pipe audio to pulse over the network which resulted in a perceptible delay
>late 2018 using various levels of stable, semi-stable, bleeding edge git distros/component versions
>even tried custom AURs when on Arch
Setup was instant, effortless, and worked in Xenserver but I refuse to have my OS environments reliant on paid software that could change pricing/terms at any moment.
The free front ends to xen and kvm like Kimchi would not work at all no matter what I tried.
I'm still mad that I wasted so much time on this and that the state is really good for paid software and basically non-functional and completely manual if you go the free route.
PCI passthrough for gaymen is one of the greatest jokes ever played on the world's helpless spergs.
And why is that fellow user?
>What would you recommend then?
Windows.
