Takes a special kind of autism to fake something like that

Just spent my January bonus on a fuly-loaded NAS, so now that my storage is set for the foreseeable future I'm going to have a huuuuuuge reorganisation this Spring.

>set up media server on NAS
>spring-clean EVERYTHING into mkv, plus subtitles, etc
>move pi-hole to NAS via Docker
>set up pi as a torrent box
>cancel Google One sub, use free-tier Drive only for irreplacable shit like passwords.kdbx, essential installers, plus Google Photos library

Basically offloading everything possible out of my main PC and into one smart, low-power little box I can leave underneath the TV and feed the Chromecast.

> starts with 20 celsius
LOL faggots, I ran one HDD in -35 for a month.
It died when I moved it inside the house and powered on immediately.

Fuck!!! I'm poor, only 1TB

if there's something worse than extreme temperatures, it's extreme temperature changes

more like dead from condensation

>using docker with pihole
>using pi to torrent when you can do it from a nas
What the fuck are you even doing

>pihole
I figure the NAS is going to be on 24/7 anyway, save for the occasional temporary 3am software/security update, so I may as well run something useful (pihole) on hardware that's a step-up in reliability from a pi which is, frankly, disposable
>pi to torrent
because this way i get to use my pi for something that's not really 'mission critical' but still useful, and i can re-use some of my current PC's older drives using an enclosure.

put ur older drives in ur NAS and create a pool with it and run transmission or something inside a jail

pihole docker is shit and creates unnecessary overhead, run it from a jail or vm

>put ur older drives in ur NAS
naw, I've already ordered a full set of brand-new drives. I'd rather spend a little extra and have something new, with a warranty, instead of recycling old kit.

>pihole docker is shit and creates unnecessary overhead
i don't really see how it could be any different to running it from a pi, it's a dns-based adblock solution wherever it's run from.

why don't you want to use old drives in your NAS?

The same reason I wouldn't put pre-worn tyres on my car: peace of mind.

Anyway, like I said, I'll be re-using the drives I already have by turning my pi into a torrent box. I won't cry too hard if the pi's SD corrupts or the spinning iron starts clicking, but it's still a useful thing to have in the meantime.

Used tires have defects and some may not be safe. Your comparison is shit because old hard drivers don't have defects.

>old hard drivers don't have defects
They also don't have a warranty, either. Which is why I'm happy to spend a little extra to have a quartet of brand-new, identical drives: peace of mind.

Peace of mind of what? What exactly is a hard drive with warranty going to do that a regular hard drive can't do?

I considered a larger boot drive when 1tb ssds were on sale, but I didn't really need it.

>all Windows in this thread
Jow Forums is ruined

A warranty won't get your data back you retard it will just refund your money, which you already spent on buying a new hard drive.

Well, with a drive that's still under warranty, I can get a replacement if the drive fails for some reason: bad manufacturing batch, power supply hiccup, software/malware issue, or just plain bad luck caused by a spiteful God. With old drives, that's not possible, and I'd have an expensive paperweight.

It doesn't make my data magically come back, it just gives me peace of mind if shit does happen.

It's more expensive to buy a new drive instead of using a old drive.

That's true. However, I've saved up for a while to afford to buy this kit, and as mentioned I'd rather pay a little extra for something that'll last a while and that'll give peace of mind.

plebs. have my veeam repository.

If an old drive haven't died in the first six months, it's not going to stop working until it hits MBTF which is somewhere from 11 to 110 years under 24/7 operation

>peace of mind
you'll literally get more peace of mind with a mildly-used hdd than a brand new one
hdd's are most likely to die either;
- immediately
- within a few months
- 10+ years of active use

if i were to place a bet on a 1 year old hdd or brand new hdd which will last to see the next year, i'd place it on the year old hdd

Uhh you mean like this? Sorry I'm not a nerd xD

cool VPS, bro
who're you hiring that from?

>there's no such thing as HDD mistreatment
>there's no way people would try to sell a HDD that's had problems since day one
Hell, man, half the time when I move one of my hard drives fail. I can't imagine wanting every hard drive I buy to be packaged and shipped by amateurs.

These aren't burn-tested hard drives you're buying. They're USED hard drives. You have no idea what they've been put through before you get them.

online.net, but the last one is just an rclone FUSE mount.

is there any advantage one way or another to mapping as a drive (Z:\) vs. a network location (\\stuff\docs)

>storing data on fucking NTFS
are you all fucking retarded? setup a simple linux fileserver and use samba
not to mention your lack of backups. absolute brainlets

ok now tell me what's wrong with my NTFS storage
I'm and I got multiple 4 TB external drives to serve as backups

In my experience some apps cannot see a network location so I always use mapping.
are you blind?

This is the drive I do for work every day

oh? so she has a mature, yet tight, interface?

Thank you for telling us where you live and work, as well as the route you take between them.

Whats wrong with NTFS?

I also have a 1TB external drive at about 850GB full of backups, and a 150GB one I briefly used in between my previous and current computer.
I really need to get more drives, the data hoarding I want to do takes more storage than I have at the moment.
