As I've asked this to Soviets before who worked in the science field, probably not much. Shortages and trying to prove might to the rest of the world instead of having normal deadlines. Work harder or be sent to gulag is not the best way to motivate people.
Probably some amazing space stuff as they were fascinated by it, plus it has propoganda value. If it's not good for the State, as a direct dictator born of and by the will of the people, no funding.
