AWS job embarrased myself

Hired at $600 a day to work with node.js and lambda functions. Already built an amazing god damn 3d networked game, so easily get job.

Suddenyl asked what aws-cli is

Im like i dunnot I paste my code into the lambda function box thingie on the webpage.

Boss looks horrified

How fucked am I guys?

I just never had to log in using my shell into aws I always just SSHed into my instances.

Am I being paranoid or am i well and truly fucked?

And if Im fucked - how did I get so far without really hearing or caring about aws-cli?

just go to amazon.com and get the free books on aws, start from there
you might get fired if this is your first month and there are others in line, otherwise dont worry

well it is my first month and there are others in line

well fuck

there goes my dream job

shit now I feel like crap

its my fault right

well look up your contract, usually its 1 or 3 months that they can just throw you out without any damage to them.

My first job was with 6 months gratis on their part. Did quite horrible, worse than you, I went in there for python position, ended up doing scripts for the sysadmins and... well I never knew what exactly sysadmins do until that moment. Never mind, I had positive outlook, good work ethic and I think I was cheaper (to train and whatnot) than the next guy in line.

So this might cheer you up. If the time comes, and they try to lay you off, just negotiate, some more time for training etc. if you can live with smaller salary ask for less until proven etc. It's in their interest to train you as they wish, you will become more valuable than the next random guy that knows aws or whatever they are into.

I completely bombed a job interview with AWS due to lack of AWS-CLI knowledge. I feel ashamed just thinking about it now. If you're comfortable with bash, it's not hard to pick up. It doesn't sound like you did, but don't claim to be some expert, because you will get fucked.

This also reminds me of being 19 and interviewing for a tech support and responding "What's Active Ditectory?" when asked about my experience using it.

i really appreciate it guys I have no one to talk to about this and i feel so bad. They fired my colleague less then 3 working days ago, for poor performance so yeah : (

ill be ok thanks for your replies

remember, if the worst comes, not to give up on the firing, try to negotiate (if this really is your dream job/opportunity)

at least show us the game or some gamplay videos

>fired my colleague for poor performance
Stuff like that scares me about working for larger companies.

thanks for your time guys I appreciate it

it usually happens more often in smaller ones, user. you think at google everyone is 100% productive? most of the fuckers just lie their way to end meets and/or just use their race/gender card

Yeah I see what you mean, but in my experience there's less canidates lining up to replace you at smaller companies. I've never been fired from a small company despite being self-taught and learning all the way.

testing blazing fast otter-browser install on linux mint
dude, everyone knows cli is command line interface, are you even l33t?

It's impossible to get fired at big companies unless you literally kill people or something as crazy. It's only at small companies that you can be fired. The counterpart is that there are less office politics at smaller companies and you get a lot more mobility. For example, you also cannot get a promotion at big companies, while that's no problem in small ones (exception, as usual, is sales and management).

i bet you're asian

and yes you're fired

why cant you get a promotion in big companies? I have noticed this too

Green badge?

Your lead won't like this.

cool thanks

Because you need growth to create the positions. Big companies being generally awful to work out, they have a turnover rate of around 2 years, but only for the low-rung people. Since the existing teams rather pivot than stagnate while a new one is created, new roles are almost never created. Finally, only when someone retires is there an opening, but retirement only happens in the higher rungs (usually it causes a kind of sliding where everyone in the hierarchy moves up, so there's no opportunity for people who aren't friends with the right people). In the end, management plays musical chair while the normal people get to roleplay as the floorboards.

>It's impossible to get fired at big companies unless you literally kill people or something as crazy.
Wut? Absolutely not true at all, look up Amazon PIP.

I jokingly asked if there were any free time to browse websites and I was told if you have any downtime in Amazon you should be sweeping the floors or cleaning up the area.

Sounds like absolute hell.

why the fuck did I tell him I didnt know about aws cli

why FUUUUUCK I mean I knew roughyl
but I said nope show me

all becuase of a stupid simple shell script to help me read some log files

GOD DAMMIT

you do sound like a fucking faggot tho

>Im like i dunnot I paste my code into the lambda function box thingie on the webpage.
I dunno shit about devops, why is this bad? Less secure than using aws-cli?

Because Amazon spent money developing it, so not using it is bad.

It's the same at every company, it's called performance evaluation and It has nothing to do with firing people, it's just an excuse to stall people they don't like and deny bonuses/salary increases/etc. The whole point is precisely to get people to leave instead of firing them by annoying them until they can't take it anymore, and this is used by managers who don't like their employees (usually because the employee is a threat to their position). But nobody really gets fired in the end. Read about it yourself.

Ohhhh he works at amazon. Got it.

Makes sense.

no i dont work at amazon

I work at some random company

they just use AWS for their shit

I was hired specifically as a JS coder

is aws worth learning? I always just use digital ocean but if I ever had to scale anything I'd be fucked.
