Nowhere near obsolete. I have 5 of then tostore passwords, random files, and bitcoin. Alot of people use them because they are more secure and more convenient than cloud services.
Not that user, but I use Sandisk and Lexar flashdrives mostly because they are cheap. I got a 128 GB Sandisk usb drive for $30.
