HD 58X is probably the best bang for buck pair imo. Love my HD439 still. Got them refurbed when I was a student like 6 years ago and they still hold up.

I own these. They're okay but they're only really worth $100 with the other amount the tacked on bluetooth/noise cancelling functions. A plus is they have a 3.5mm jack so you can power them with your own DAC if you so please.
There's a dedicated button to turn the noise cancelling off.

Used a $25 pair of Monoprice headphones for ten years. Just ordered a pair of MDR-V6s because I wanted something else that didn't hurt my ears anymore and was sub $100, and compared a bunch of headphones like the Audio Technicas but decided on the Sonys because I owned a pair of V150s years and years ago and they were my favorite headphones I've ever worn.

Terrible headphones and complete rip off. They are inaccurate and completely unbalanced in sound. I use Apple earbuds that come standard with the ipod for studio monitoring and they are extremely accurate. Apple earbuds are outperforming the WH-CH700N. Update 11/20/2012: I told my butler yesterday to throw these in the trash can as I can't even stand looking at them anymore. These things have put me through more torture and suffering than that experienced by starving African degenerate cockroach peasants and serfs. The Beverly Hills Garbage Truck Service has since smashed these into their truck and it is probably now in a landfill. Thank God the nightmare of unbearable agonizing pain and suffering is over. I once also ripped up a crisp hundred dollar bill and flushed it into the toliet because I was mad at someone. I don't care if I could have given that money to maybe someone homeless with no food to eat. Managing my anger by ripping up a crisp hundred dollar bill and flushing it down a toliet is money better spent to help my emotional well-being than giving it to a starving cockroach peasant. X2s are still my faves, had mine since they were first released.

They're great all-rounder headphones and especially good for gaming when combined with a V-moda boom-pro mic.

What's wrong with the 598 aside from being overpriced?

Those are good for audio tracking, but don't excel for listening depending on the genre. Anything with higher emphasis on mids or maybe highs will sound great with those, but the bass is weak (as it should be for tracking headphones). You aren't getting bad quality with those and they're definitely better than some of the others posted in here, but I wouldn't say that they're designed for media consumption. Also you can't watch porn at all with those because everyone can hear what you're listening to.

I guess the low end of the spectrum is weak and the extreme high end is as well, but the mids are clear.

I'm thinking of getting the 80Ω DT770s instead of the m50x for my first decent pair of cans. I'm currently using wired Apple ear buds that do a decent job but are starting to fail on me since I've been using them for 3ish years but I could try to stretch them out for another 3-4 months.

I have a pair of Koss Pro/4AAs that I bought maybe 8 years ago. They're amazing but I'm thinking of upgrading to the Pro/4S if I ever have the money to spare, but it doesn't feel like an essential upgrade as these are still my favorite headphones ever.

They're not the bassiest but the bass that's there is thick and clean. Best aspect is how clear vocals are. You're gonna want to have lossless audio sources to get your money's worth though.
