Why don't we just make an open source, non-profit replacement for discord that actually respects user privacy?

You can't make money and respect privacy at the same time.
You need a lot of money for the servers that Discord uses.

Tox flopped

Riot.im exists

just use ventrilo

who's going to host it?

>working for free

just make it decentralized you retard

Gather initial hosting costs through crowd-funding. Then, to fund hosting on an ongoing basis, use a tiered donation structure. Free servers have chat and some voice functions, whereas donations expand the voice chat experience as well as increasing support for large images and other file formats. So a mix of "pay what you can" and "unlock features by donating".

sure start working on it I'll add the programming socks emote.

Give people the ability to host their own servers

This.
Why can’t Jow Forums projects work without dying so quickly?

itt: Jow Forums reinvents Tox again

People are trying. Matrix is a start, but we don't have good clients yet. Riot.im is really slow for me

because if we were competent coders we wouldn't be here shitposting about amd vs intel.

but it's not a replacement for discord if you have to pay or host it yourself

There is Rocket Chat. It's just you have to set up your own server and such, which most don't wanna do.

Fuck off. Mumble serves my needs and it'll run on any cheap ass hardware I can throw it on. Why would I need anything more than a Raspberry Pi and a DDNS? We're talking like $70 to have a voice server for life.

hell, why not?
I WILL MAKE THE LOGO

People who actually care about privacy would consider this. Discord's "free" tag comes at a high price. Right now they are just burning through investor capital until they can expand data mining and try to make the game store profitable. As investor pressure mounts, the user experience, advertising, and privacy invasions will get worse. Just look at facebook.

Matrix/Riot has been a thing for years. I've been using it since ever.
Get up with the times, grandpa.

It's not a software problem, it's a marketing problem.
Discord grew like that because skype became unbearable, and it was biggest well marketed replacement for skype that didn't needed to use a phone to register unlike EVERYTHING ELSE.
If was not for the phone thing, google talk probably would be the shit people used.

Riot.im

I think I'm the girl in that picture!

Based and cute

Romantic partners are a huge security vulnerability. They also run proprietary closed-source software.

based and kaospilled

kaos chan is cute

Cringe.

found the child porn trading furfag

IRC still exists after all these years.

How about just making a really nice web client for xmpp

>People who actually care about privacy would consider this
Having a secure way of communicating is worthless if there is nobody you can communicate with. Everyone is on discord, almost nobody will be on your new platform that they have to pay for. Even for people who are willing to pay, there would be nothing they can on there outside of exchanging anime pictures with a bunch of weebs.

What's the actual appeal of discord any way? The couple times I've ventured there I just get hosed down with useless memes and chatter and when I tab out there's the constant annoying notifications about said junk. And if I leave and come back, there's a million notifications everywhere and I know it's all useless and the things I might be interested in I'd have to invest time into hunting down by backrtracking through all the useless SPAM.

IRC.

>BUT MAH VOICE CHAT AND MAH EMBEDDED IMAGES AND OTHER LAME SHIT
Nobody cares, kid. Grow up.

really useful for games that have lackluster in-game clan/team commication systems

>IRC
For when you don't need any semblance of security.
XMPP + OMEMO is superior in every way.

>why can't a bunch of useless idiots/LARPers make something.

I dunno, why not? Maybe because making something that actually scales requires senior level knowledge in subjects that are advanced to begin with, such as Elixir/Erlang and OTP in the case of discord.

Hasn't IRC been a thing for 3 decades now?

Yeah I was required to use it for some voice communication. But ventrillo/teamspeak which used to be the norm for game voice communication worked just the same for those purposes. They even let you send text messages. So it's all the same except discord allows you to send images.

I'm guessing people paid for teamspeak/vent servers and that's why they all moved to discord?

I would be able to handle it if people who load up the discord app didn't immediately lose 20 IQ and start spamming shit.

All of my friends use it, I wouldn't use it otherwise.
Doesn't help that this board mostly just talks about things instead of making them, yeah.

Fuck off you stupid boomers. The whole reason discord is big is because it provides an interface for an entire community. Text chat, images for sharing memes and videos, voice chat for gaming sessions, PMs for erp. All in a convenient and easy to use, streamlined package.

>no security
Um, what, it's not insecure and you can use a secure connection.

Except if I bring my own group that's not a problem.

Discord started on reddit, advertised using memes, and gives special privileges to furries and trannies. It's designed to exploit the social network effect by using a structure that puts the creator of a discord group into a cult leader position (which is why it generates so much drama, too). That stuff gave it a free shill army. It's also designed to be extremely easy to use and to have lots of convenient voice features.

>I'M EIGHT AND NEED VOICE CHAT FOR MAH MINECRAP SERVER AND I LIKE TO LOOK AT STUPID MEMES

Maybe my memory is faulty, but I am fairly certain that was a version of AIM chat that basically did in 2008 what Discord does today.

It allows you to have many things in one place. You can have channels for scheduling advents, etc etc without having to have a separate forum where everyone needs to go in addition to the voice chat app

wasnt tox used by a couple pedos in australia some years back?
i dont think that counts as a flop

Just use matrix if you want a free and open discord. Riot is the only public client that has managed to not be shit

>It's also designed to be extremely easy to use and to have lots of convenient voice features.
So is actually a good product?

its not the product, you are

Or just get the funding from Shark Tank

Would a delicious drink be good after someone slips roofies into it?

Just copy the discord interface and layer it over irc and mega or whatever for file sharing. Done

gfs are a botnet. stay pure.

THE ROARING KAOS!

Yes, use your label to discredit my valid points. Just know that your argument is one built entirely out of bullshit that is petty tribalism at its heart.

IRC EXISTS

Open source rarely gets anything done without gullible investors throwing millions at it so people can hire proper developers at 5000€/month for a few years.

tox

Most succinct and effective explanation of discord's rise I've seen

I just pay for it not with money but with information about myself. I don't like it and don't use it. But it's still a good product for end user.

IRC, Mumble and Mastodon/Pleroma. Maybe eventually Matrix or XMPP again.

Not good enough yet? Improve any of these then.
