Time is running short for free updates for commercial users running Oracle’s Java Development Kit (JDK) 8, the most in-use version of Java and the foundation for many Java applications. The free JDK 8 updates will end by February 2019 (this month); a paid subscription for JDK 8 updates remains available. Oracle advises users to switch to Java 11 instead.
Why did this happen Jow Forums? What are the differences between Java 8 and 11? What are the options for users for Java 8? Any recomendations?
Apparently Java is a really good choice alongside SQL database development. Nobody expects anyone to use it for web development. What do you say to that, friendo?
Jordan Murphy
OpenJDK is free dude.
Also Jigsaw is the major change you should be aware of. The JVM now loads classes in modules, only using what is necessary. Reflection access with this module system has become much stricter too (setAccessible nerfed).
You don't have to use the module system per-say, but you should get to know it even so because thats the direction java is taking.
Ryan Morgan
>not running Java 11 I bet you have Python 2.7 too.
Christopher Hughes
Java got kicked out from the web long time ago, it got kicked from desktop long time ago, soon it will be kicked from mobile as well, stop using Java.
Isaiah Flores
>Java got kicked out from the web long time ago imagine being this retarded
Aiden Collins
>Java got kicked out from the web long time ago unironically the best performing framework atm vertx.io/
Josiah Martin
> Thiking that Javascript and Java are the same imagine being this retarded
Jayden Edwards
I never thought Javascript and Java are the same? A shitload of backends are still running on Java you fucking moron.
Michael Reed
Android uses a language similar to java. As a runtime it is completely different.
Ayden Richardson
I was talking about shitty java apps in the frontend
Isaac Collins
Well then learn to fucking express yourself correctly > "Java got kicked out from the web long time ago"
Also JavaFX/TornadoFX is superior to Electron in every way.
Josiah Nguyen
Electron still has better deployment. I wish Java had native support for something similar and not 3rd party hacks.
David Lee
And yet you still see everything from IOT devices to POS running Java. I don't think it's dying anytime soon.
Sebastian Bell
What's wrong with jlink?
Owen Torres
>this is how people with ass burgers communicate lol never change
Nicholas Miller
Ionic is better, it can convert web app to both desktop and mobile app, it may be PWA but if done correctly it can be as fast as native stuff.
Jayden Fisher
>but if done correctly it can be as fast as native stuff no
Jace Thompson
yes
Cameron Reed
It's based on Electron you fucking moron. There's absolutely no way on earth it will perform better than a JVM application.. and just wait until JavaFX works with GraalVM. Goodbye Electron.
Dylan Hughes
You're a fucking retard Amazon runs on Java Netflix runs on Java Alibaba runs on java Mastercard runs on Java Almost every bank runs on Java Cassandra runs on Java Kafka runs on Java Spark runs on Java neo4j runs on Java A large part of google runs on Java.
Java is the king of distributed systems and nosql databases, the modern web wouldnt be possible without java.
Fucking immature retard who doesn't know shit.
Alexander Baker
was refering to frontend u java nigger
Thomas Perry
no one gives a shit about frontend you imbecile codemonkey
Noah Sanders
k bruh... take is easy
Ayden Rodriguez
What will happen with kotlin now? The IntelliJ guys are autistic and swear by Java 8. Are we all fucked?
Kotlin is nothing but Hype. Nobody will use it in 3 years, especially if Google comes through with Fuchsia because right now it's only being used by hipsters for Android development. If you want real functional programming on the JVM, you should use Scala anyway. Yea, Data Classes are fine but we will have then in Java 13 anyway.
t. nodejs Zoomer
Ian Cooper
wait, haven't Java updates always been free? they're changing this?
Robert Kelly
Oracle is no longer providing free updates for its JDK
HOWEVER most features of the Oracle JDK have been open sourced and are now part of openjdk which is the official JVM implementation. many different providers have already committed to backporting security fixes to the openjdk 8 implementation, most notable amazon
Parker Roberts
wow
that's suicide on their part
Parker Russell
>banks run on Java Also many banks liked mainframes and old legacy systems. Java is the next COBOL. Java is like cockroaches, the fact that it remains active doesnt mean its good.
Nathaniel Sanchez
>the fact that it remains active doesnt mean its good. Actually that's exactly what it means. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, you dumb code artisan.
Nicholas Jenkins
no? java is completely opensource now and Oracle can get money from businesses who want support (e.g. for compliance) to fund further Java development. The change in licensing does not affect you at all.
