I was thinking of doing the same so I looked some up but from what I can see RasPi is the best bang for your buxs. Here is a pretty good list if you want to have a look yourself.

the rock64 is better and not more expansive

Old thin clients out of craigslist

some cheap x86_64 laptop

How can I run an player (smplayer is the best case) on Pi and remote control it from my laptop?

Dell optiplex

Intel nucs 7th gen and 8th gen, downside is they are 4x the price of a pi for the low end one and 10x the price for the high end one, upside is the medium spec models are the same hardware as macbook pro's for 1/4 the cost of a MPB

>Pros
Now powerful hardware
Small form factor with a nice case design
Choice between the 2 inch high and 4 inch high +sata model in most cases
Vesa Mount
Compatable with linux, hackintosh,windows etc
Sata and NVME

>Cons
Expensive for what you get (easily 250-300 dollars for specing out the low tier model)
Could build a better small form factor for cheaper.
Only have upgradable ram and storage.
Generally weak GPU if you plan on light gaming

>Is there anything better than a raspberry pi?
Nearly every SBC is better than the RPi.

Then what is the best one of those?

What's your budget? But like said, probably the Rock64. It goes from $25-45.

a custom build pc

used wyse terminal

Raspberry Pi is limited to 100 megabit (3 and earlier) or ~250 megabit (3+) Ethernet throughput. It's not very good as a network server.

Get the Rock64 Pro instead. The RK3399 is a beast of an SoC, you get an NVMe slot, SATA, and 4GB RAM.

Have an Optiplex 390 mini tower from work for exact that purpose. Works like a charm and is built to last. also, cost nothing for me.

>raspberry pi
>server to host my stuff
you must be joking

Would be nice if they came out with a Pi 4 and had a half decent 14nm SoC

Their market is education. Raw power is not a big factor in that area. Simplicity, predictability and support matter more.
Use the best tool for your job but don't diss the saw if it can't drive nails.

new irange pi came out recently, but as others have suggested the rock64 soc is a decent bump in performance.

next step up is away from the SBC and into NUC's and other 5x5 form factors, odroid h2 os pretty cheap and LP barebones

Like nextloud and stuff.

And I'm still here waiting for a new pi model. I'm hoping to see one by the end of the year

The rpi is nice for tinkering but if you get serious you should just use a NUC or something that's a little higher powered. The NIC runs on the USB bus and they both choke, a lot. No USB3 either. Just buy an old dell optiplex on craigslist, or get a NUC. Much more expensive but they are much much nicer. I ran nextcloud on an rpi for a year and it was painful. Syncthing is something the pi can handle pretty well though.

>orangepi.org/
objectively superior

An atom or amd geode thin client couldn't even play 720p video.

>>Is there anything better than a raspberry pi?
>Nearly every SBC is better than the RPi.

Point me to one that has the same software support than the Pi.

The PI has a general use scenario that you may not fit depending on need.

Price
Power consumption
Expansion
Thermal Constraints
ect

There are tons of options.
Raspberry Pi
Minnow board minnowboard.org/
Micro PC (Various types and brands) zotac.com/us/product/mini_pcs/pi225
MiniPC (Various types and brands) zotac.com/us/product/mini_pcs/overview
Scarry as fuck chinese android minipc

The list goes on for awhile.

Me again. I was also assuming that you were looking for something compact with a low power signature.

Yes, literally anything. Radios are only good for robots that need to be lightweight and mobile, or pi-hole setups for people who can’t into Linux servers, or making a retropie that no one will ever play because those games were never actually fun, they were just the only thing around back then.

A $40 Optiplex from 2013 is a better buy.

Pretty bad option.

Get a Rock64Pro or maybe Odroid XU4, they have more processing power and can ~saturate GBE from a HDD or SSD. Far more useful devices.

If you need even more power, I guess you're going for some x86_64.

(cont'd)
Ah, and fanless operation with these is far more pleasant.

The RPi generally throttles below what's acceptable for media viewing and such if you do fanless.

It is not expected in 2019. Upton was interviewed about this recently.

As for x86_64 small boards, there's this:

up-shop.org/

or even this:

udoo.org/

expensive as fuck

this
own odroid hc2 and it the best buy ive ever made

Just to piggyback on this, any good raspberry pi alternatives for kodi media centers that can decode H265?

>doesn't support radio through GPIO

why would you ever wanna listen to radio?

>listen to radio
I want to transmit FM.

x86 PC/104 board

checked
what do you need FM for??

You need a license for that and certified equipment.

>raspberry pi
>expecting predictability from broadcom chips with no free graphics drivers
fuck you, retard
the pi is a piece of shit and it's shit for playing any sort of media
even the fucking lan has to go through the pi's usb hub
what a fucking piece of shit

With RPi you don't have to, that's the idea.

Possible low cost option to move a singal throught his whole house with just normal radios?
