The non-Web internet

What parts of the internet does Jow Forums use that aren't related to the web?

The dark web

FTP

gopher. I'm not sure that it's not part of the web though. Certainly it's not HTTP or what many would consider "the web", but there is a gopher URL scheme, hence gopher resources can be addressed as part of the World Wide Web.

rtfm.mit.edu has a shit load of old UseNet FAQs. Currently reading one about ghost stories.

The holy grail is being able to connect two linux boxen together with a crossover cable and have everything brought up automatically so theycan ping each other

There's always shell accounts.

irc

Is there really much there besides blogs and a million copies of "is gopher still relevant.txt"?

Sure. I'm not even a big fan of blogs but I still browse gopherspace daily.

Here's my gopher:
gopher://khzae.net
Admittedly a lot of the stuff on the main menu is just "[common web thing] but on Gopher!", but otherwise I use it in place of a "normal" website. The gopher-impaired can access it over HTTP(S):
khzae.net

Other gopherholes I visit regularly are:
gopher://gopher.floodgap.com - Modern "centre" of gopherspace, has daily news feeds and the Veronica-2 search engine.
gopher://gopherpedia.com - Mirror of Wikipedia in gopherspace

how to browse a gopher, please needfully explain

do you need a specific hostname or port? how about username and password? trying to connect via filezilla but getting permission denied

There's this website, justfuckinggoogleit.com/

It explains everything.

Weird. I'm on fine with mc.

nvm had peerblock running still, derp.
thanks for the heads up tho, checking out now

Get a gopher client, or a web browser with gopher support. Lynx supports gopher, just include the gopher:// prefix in the URL.

If you use Firefox, the person that maintains Floodgap has a plugin called OverbiteWX which (re)enables gopher support. This currently uses a web gateway to make the connections since Firefox removed support for lower-level networking in Addons. You can also use the gateway in any browser from this site: gopher.floodgap.com/gopher/gw

If you have an Android phone, there's a nice little client app made by a local on F-droid: f-droid.org/en/packages/com.gmail.afonsotrepa.pocketgopher/

so...new to gopher...is there anything interesting to look at? so far it's all bland/dated shit or at least bland/dated layouts of current shit...unless that's the point of the whole thing

ssh and ftp mostly

There's a lot more on that ftp archive than on that web site.

>layouts
Gopher isn't about a fancy layout. Menus just list directories/files hierarchically, there's no equivalent to CSS (though you can serve HTML/CSS/JS over the protocol too). But, it means each client can display it/customize it however they want. Here's a more "unique" client, gophervr, which displays menus as 3D spaces.

Gopher was designed purely for information. HTTP/"The Web" added commercialization to the Internet, which isn't inherently bad, but has lead to the mess of JS-abuse, ads, and tracking that we have today.

All that aside, I find maintaining a Gopher to be much easier in the long run. It took a little more setup than say, installing Apache from a repo (but not that much, considering how simple the protocol is compared to HTTP) but creating plain text files and "gophermaps" is a lot simpler than HTML pages.

torrent, syncthing, irc, ssh, smtp, ftp, git. There are a ton of protocols other than http

anyone USENET? its great for porn

And as for layout of textfiles the standard dictates a maximum of 72 columns and CRLF line endings. This can be done easily by using nroff to format your files, and just putting:
.ll 72

at the top of it. What I usually do then is put in a macro for indenting the text two spaces so your not bumping right at the window of the screen on the left side. As well as the macro to stop hyphenation and justification.

I don't think RFC 1436 dictates max characters for text files, it suggests display strings on menus should be "under 70 characters" so there's room for a tag/symbol indicating the item type on a standard 80-char display.
But regardless, 72 is a good limit, within that optimal range of characters-per-line for human readability.

Bump for an interesting thread.

Needs more recommendations though.

SFTP, SSH, XMPP, IRC, Email, DNS and (once in a while) Gopher.
At least, that is everything I use that doesn't use HTTP(S).

Is just a shill gopher thread.
IPFS is where is at.

SSH

i pirate ebooks over irc

I love browsing ancient FTP servers and seeing what documents they have on them. I've never been interested in binaries even on the web, but finding some old text file on a unique subject is still one of my favourite things to do online.

I think this might be why I like Jason Scott so much. TextFiles.Com is a treasure trove.

Is NetworkManager shared mode difficult to use now?

Yahoo Messenger

I hate finding ones that are offline that sound great.
> world.std.com The `obi' directory has everything from online fables to accounts of Hiroshima survivors.
What a tragedy that it's offline.
