Programmers are the dumbest, most autistic people in the white collar workforce. No one wants to do their shitty job. It's a bitch to do and you really need to be partially autistic to even function correctly otherwise you'll get burned out.
It's not that much of a far cry from a lot of blue collar jobs like roof repair, plumbing, or landscaping. These jobs are tough, and it's hard to do it if you're older, this is why most programmers aren't over 40. They get burned out and leave, or take management positions.
For me, I got smart. I just contract now and most of my work is foreigners who I speak their language. I have to make threats but I deliver to my clients. But I don't have to stare at a damn computer screen for 8 hours a day while a woman diversity hire tells me what to do.
