I use Waterfox which functions just fine with horizontal ones that take up much less space thanks to scrolling which Chrome deliberately doesn't allow.

I am using vertical tabs, but my 2nd monitor is in portrait mode and for things such as your OP image I keep it in full screen with no menu or tab sidebar

I use the bookmarks sidebar instead. I put some lines in userChrome.css to get rid of the header at the top of the sidebar so it's neater. I use a dedicated folder for "saved tabs", which I keep open at all times in my bookmarks sidebar. When I'm not going to look at tabs for a while, I'll just drag them to my bookmarks sidebar and close the tabs, so they're still there saved but not taking up system resources. I only keep 1-5 tabs open at a time. I used to be one of those people with hundreds or thousands of tabs open at a time, and it slowed my system to a crawl. Now I just have hundreds or thousands of bookmarks instead and it works great.

They use up significant amount of screen realestate that is used extensively in modern horizontal-optimized layouts.
Moreover, while firecuck is no longer usable, it never needed that because
1- tabs never became too small to see, instead scroll controls appeared
2- entering text in the url bar would suggest matching tabs, allowing you to quickly switch tabs even if you didn't know where they were
In summary, vertical tabs are not flawless, and are a poor workaround for poor UX when superior solutions already exist.

Thats fine if every tab you have open goes to different sites. Once you have a few on a single site how would you tell them apart other then seeing the title?

You can set it to shrink or even hide. It's even better when using trees, because you can shrink them so they're out of the way when you're looking at something else.

They clash with my vertical taskbar (autism can cause motor skill issues) and I mostly use keyboard commands bound to buttons on a MMO mouse anyways.

I just decided to give it a go now and I actually much prefer it to tab groups I was using previously. Just a shame you have to use a userChrome.css modification to hide the native tabs, should be an inbuilt feature to do that.
