Getting a 12 inch laptop soon with a somewhat low res 1366x768 display. What would be the best DE on Linux that makes best use of the low res screen? GNOME would obviously be the worst in this case.

gnome isn't that bad, actually. works fine on my x220 and you could still go with a more slim theme.

xfce looks like 10 years old KDE. But it's getting there.

KDE works fine on those sizes and doesn't look like some autists hobby project like xfce.

>xfce looks like 10 years old KDE
Only if you don't rice it, takes like 10 minutes to make it look super modern

Based

I may be biased as I used Gnome a couple years back, maybe thing have changed but don't seem to be judging from new screenshots. I'm doing this for an X201 machine by the way.

Good thing about Xfce though is lightweight

This.

ram usage is still above average, but not as bad as it already was. it's also way smoother since 3.30.

I only like xfce when I'm using the custom mxlinux version.

example? it's hard to make it look modern with all the gradient gtk+ themes and window borders from the 90s

honestly, if you want to keep resource usage to a minimal and maximise your screen estate, some tiling wm (just a wm, not a full DE) such as dwm or i3 would be best.

I'm not using xfce now so i can't post screenshot, but xfce panel is highly configurable you can set it to pure black with a bit of transparency and make it look like a flexible vertical docker.
As for gtk you can use any gtk theme under xfce, you can use gnome's Adwaita (Dark), as for window borders I just use default because I don't care but should be fairly to install something else.
Also use whisker menu.

I'm using xubuntu on an old computer because specs/performance and I can't get it to show themes I downloaded. Sorry new to linux I tried multiple file locations.

thanks for the tips!

Xfce or Budgie.

>I've used both Icewm and Openbox and while they seem nice, their configuration and customisation are hard. There are barely any good guides online showing how to customise.

Xfce or MATE. You may also try Openbox

There are better lightweight DEs or WMs out there that don't look as puke inducing as xfce tho.

I3, dwm...

Then what's the best lightweight one (and low res good) in your opinion

xfce can be customized so much it can look profoundly different then it's default look.

this but unironically, i3 layouts are shit, and I don't know how to make either gnome or xfce gapless.
KDE is immediately disregarded for being such a clusterfuck. Even gnome has better modularity (modularity=/=customization)

This u niggers

Unless your computer is super slow or you are set on one of the lighter weight ones, KDE is always your best bet.

KDE and surprisingly Unity, handle HiDPI out of the box better than all the other DEs out there. GNOME is a close third though. Everything else is trash on high resolution screens without a lot of tinkering.

I feel like I’m the only guy on this board using cinnamon

I associate Cinnamon users with Mint, i.e. Windows-literate newbies :P

this. cinnamon is gnome bloated ad infinitum.
seriously xfce is so shit, it has the bar with a window list, but the shortcuts can' merge with already open windows, neither the dock can, it just has icons to launch a new instance. it's very redundant and inefficient

Just tried Fedora with KDE and to be honest, I'm sticking with Xubuntu,
I don't need anything fancy, just a DE that works.

+ I am also a brainlet and used to the debian system.
Too stupid to switch to switch to other package managers and stuff.

I'm on fedora and it's kind of shit using the "stable" version of the kernel. using an lts version it's the way to go. Powertop broke on 4.20.10 for me. I'm thinking of switching to debian since the packages there are even more crazily splitted than in fedora.
Or CentOS, I don't know.

1366x763 is shit. i'm on a $20 monitor in that resolution. god i want to kill myself every time i turn this thing on
can see how it might be okay for a laptop though

I am on the stable 18.4? kernel
The thing is, I knew how to install and get all the stuff on a debian based system, switching to fedora made me feel like an idiot again.

Since I'm not doing any specialised things there is no need for a special distro/DE.

>man dnf
>dnf search
>not there
>search in firefox for external repos
you say you are a brainlet but brainlets don't acknowledge what they are, you were just lazy to tie your new shoes. maybe you are american and are too fat to move
