0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

i installed LXDE on my ubuntu server, that way i could run a desktop if i needed to use a browser.
after running it all i get is this black screen and a trash icon. Clicking in restart makes the screen flick and i can see the actual wallpaper for a second, like the black screen is covering it.
nothing executes, general settings window does but there are no categories.
also tried the lubuntu-core pkg, same result.

any ideas?
sorry about the photo

Looking for a wireless controller for lutris/retroarch HTPC/console thing. I like symmetrical designs like the DS series, would the 2017 shield controller work well?
I can only find info on the 2015 version, and dualshocks have been fickle bitches.

I don't use lxde but I'm pretty sure you got it the other way around. Whatever you think the wallpaper is, my guess is it's the residual image from something else (e.g. your login manager)
and it is drawn over with the real X window which is most likely initially black.

A lot of window managers are like this, they're extremely minimal.

is there any image/video gallery program? i just want thumbnails for my videos and images so i can easily scroll around them without opening with feh.
also what is the mspaint equivalent for music, in linux? using fedora btw

Install lubuntu-desktop if you haven't that will grab the desktop stuff in case you just installed lxde by itself. After which programs in the right click applications menu should all work. You will probably need to set up a titlebar and stuff manually if you want that stuff.

you only have openbox installed with pcmanfm running as your desktop. go into preferences in pcmanfm to show the context menu in the desktop.

You're going to have to be more specific user, because right now as best I can tell the answer to your questions are to just install any random file browser and mpv.

Sounds like just using a file manager and zooming in would accomplish what you want. Or if you want an actuall gallery program use something like gthumb.

Attached: 1533260198406.png (1092x622, 271K)

yeah i should have been more specific, im a minimalistfag, so something with as little dependencies as possible is my goal.
i will take a look at gthumb though, thanks.

Is there anyway i can bind my F1 LED to caps lock being activated? On my T450 i forget wether i left it on caps or not. Is this possible on Linux?

that that you mantioned, it makes sense

didn't want to install lubuntu-besktop becouse it's too heavy (800mb+), that's why i tried lubuntu-core wich was about 250mb. didn't work though.
i was trying to set up a taskbar but all the desktop settings are either incomplete or simply wont launch.
firefox doesn't launch either, so maybe it's a window manager problem.

that's strange, i installed the xfce package, shouldn't it be overlaying the wm? and if pcmanfm was indeed running as desktop wouldn't i be able to actually open the fm?

You have an LED on your F1 key?

That's kind of non-standard you know, which makes me think that this isn't something the OS would readily have access to.
I mean, you can rebind your keys in various ways (I have my escape key turn on my capslock, and my capslock is escape) but the LED's are handled by the keyboard itself and it still uses my capslock LED whenever capslock is enabled, regardless of which key enables it.

What kind of keyboard is it?

The lenovo keyboard for my laptop. F1 LED turns on when you tap it. The other two don't light up unless the laptop is booting.

Attached: IMG_20190301_133045.jpg (1080x1920, 386K)

The other two, being my f4 key and Fn key

Attached: IMG_20190301_133045(1).jpg (1080x1920, 873K)

You are aware of why that turns on, don't you?

Actually it might be possible. Apparently "xset" can change the LED states. I can't figure out how to list all available LED's though, but I guess you can try with trial and error
Try running both of these to toggle all LED's on and off:
>xset led
>xset -led
If the one you want is turning on and off when you run that then you can try to pinpoint it with "xset led 1" and "xset -led 1", and try changing the numbers

Reposting from the last thread.
>When using s3fs, do you need an equal amount of cache/space as the file you are putting/creating in the bucket?
A little more explanation. Trying it out with torrenting, but started filling up my VPS so much so that I had to pull up the terminal on my hoster's site to fix it.

Fn turns on when you old it and press Esc. F4 probably works if you bind is to something.

did the arch wiki just fuck up their certificate or is this on my end?

It's almost always you.

I have both the F4 and F1 led on but it says its off?

Hey, I just set up a PC with Arch ARM and I can't decide which DE to pick. What do you guys suggest?

Attached: Kekin'Pepe.gif (500x497, 622K)

KDE

cmus

use thunar + thumbnailer and tumbler, works great for thumbnails

idk man, you're on your own I guess. There is another tool called "setleds" though maybe that one will work better

Is Debian better for older laptops? (Thinkpad X31 with lxde)

With dwm it is.
Just memorize a few keybindings and you are set.

I saw that Debian and Arch had one of these and felt autistic compulsion to make a Void one, lmfao. Does anyone know what font the Void logo uses?

Attached: Void4Lesb.png (1332x989, 627K)

I would recommend herbstluftwn or if you're feeling a little adventurous perhaps bspwm, openbox if you're looking for a stacking wm, all of these options are very lightweight. dwm's decent but very annoying to configure as it must be recompiled each time it is configured since configuration entails modifying source.

what's the difference between
Lubuntu minimal installation
and
Lubuntu minimal installation (GTK part)
?

posting from my first linux install

Attached: 7627d227adc6fb5fb6662ebfb9d82d7e.jpg (992x806, 389K)

For pictures, check out nomacs, comes with a gallery mode.
For video, I don't have any names but maybe check out a media center? That is if you don't find redundant having a second video player.

Why would you even configure dwm? Even if i did configure dwm, i would just bring the dwm bar down and customize nothing else.

You might as well use i3 and spend your fucking days ricing 24/7 if you want to customize.

What do you mean by "gtk part"

I highly recommend Hydrus, it allows you to manage your media library in a tag based system which is really cool

i mean this

Attached: 52983658_2036872979937375_3479562330310705152_n.jpg (869x652, 120K)

Just get debian net iso

Lubuntu
Ubuntu
Kubuntu
Niggeruntu

Its all a meme, just use debian.

I don't know much about dwm but I assume that keybinds are in the source. I'd rather not recompile just to add a goddamn keybind when in herbstluftwn I could go as far as to just use the herbstclient program to make keybinds on the fly if I want to. The config is also a shell script which makes it incredibly flexible.

If I remember correctly, DWM requires patches to prevent it from crashing when unicode characters are displayed, like an iPhone.

Lubuntu desktop with GTK applications? I assume.

Nice try shill. Dwm never crashes ever.
I only use like 4 keybindings, there are more but i never gave a fuck about em.

You mean this one user?
github .com/hydrusnetwork/hydrus
Not that user but I got interested. However I keep getting results for another piece of software but for water simulations or something.

Void? isn't that an arch fork?

Could be making your lief easier kiddo ; v )

Attached: unknown-4.png (1920x1080, 1.91M)

no

All that ricing nigger bloat.

Yuck.

Not sure if this is a troll but whatever. It's not, although its minimal install option is quite popular and indeed very minimal so it's often compared to Arch but it's a completely independent project. At the moment most of the attention it's getting is as the "systemd-less saviour", but quite honestly it's just a good distro regardless of that.

that's the most hideous thing I've seen in my life

>Bloat
It's just a little fetch-like script I wrote that prettily formats some info about my desktop, ncmpcpp+mpd which is a genuinely good music player, a script which displays the current mpd track's album art, Vim which is a genuinely good editor, and ranger which is a pretty good TUI file manager for doing bulk file operations in terminal. The terminal is the relatively minimal termite. These are all things that I use very heavily and are extremely lightweight, please clarify how my desktop is "bloat".

Is that an Arch shirt? not sure

Attached: fat guy wearing arch linux shirt.jpg (753x618, 225K)

it's possible that it's not a real font, the official svg in ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/voidlinux/logos/void.svg just uses fills and paths for the text
i answered some questions on identifont.com based on that svg and the somewhat-obscure xbps logo but couldn't identify it
maybe ask in their irc channel

Attached: xbps-logo.png (207x116, 3K)

>It's just a little fetch-like script I wrote that prettily formats some info about my desktop, ncmpcpp+mpd which is a genuinely good music player, a script which displays the current mpd track's album art

Just use cmus and shut the fuck up

>Vim which is a genuinely good editor
I use vim as well

>and ranger which is a pretty good TUI file manager for doing bulk file operations in terminal.

Ranger is bloat. Just use file operation commands.

>The terminal is the relatively minimal termite.
St is better

>how my desktop is "bloat".
Cause you're a reddit ricing nigger.

st is fucking ass to configure because recompilation and patching just for shit like scroll back is actual aids and honestly termite's minimal enough, st's popularity is a circlejerk of who gets to say they have the *most* minimal terminal which is just stupid.

ranger is indeed a little bloat compared to some of the other things in the screenshot but sometimes I need bulk rename so it's good for that and also for browsing image galleries since it has w3m image previewing.

In my experience, cmus fucking sucks. ncmpcpp's pane based UI and playlist system make far more sense. I also usually have many instances of ncmpcpp open, I'm not sure if all cmus instances operate independently but since ncmpcpp just interfaces to mpd this works very well for me.

>Reddit
It was once an okay site but as of recent it's been consistently going down the shitter, Jow Forumsunixporn is just a massive fucking "HAHAHAHAHA GUYSS FIRST I3 ARCH GAPS RICE" circlejerk which I would be disgusted to participate in.

Why do so many people think that?

Linux is a kernel

It's like I said, the minimal install is popular and Arch's only minimal install basically, they're also both kind of niche (Arch increasingly less so but it still retains that image). I imagine people would confuse Gentoo and Arch as being related projects as well if Gentoo wasn't so distinguished.

Are we going to start fighting now over which distro is better for lesbians?

My vote goes to GuixSD

I like it

been about 2 years since i've used arch as my daily driver. does Xorg still handle what GPU driver i'm using? want to test out the xf84 drivers for my thinkpad instead of mesa.

Attached: 35463c2909735df7150d5e0e1003c45de89fca9903b7b5412dc6ff694e841073.gif (720x540, 1.81M)

It's either an Arch logo or a man-boob sweat stain, but what's the difference am I right?

xf86*.

Arch is kinda on a downward spiral atm as I see it, would not recommend. Try out Void honestly, they even have a pkgbuild thingy equivalent called void-src or something, it's p nice and there's an AUR helper-esq wrapper for it too, it's really good and I'm probably going to make it my daily driver soon when I get a SSD for my laptop.

>not properly titled
Fuck OP, he is a troll and did it on purpose

wow i made one today too
not lesbian related thou but still

Thoughts?

Attached: gnunet-anonymous-logo.png (320x280, 30K)

New logo? Gnunet is cool, I hear about the new version release, about damn time.

that graphic is ass the text by itself would work just fine

Get things like this out of your life. Life is short. Don't waste it with feeling bad bloat.

>the net sucks I want a gnu one

Anyone know how to fix screentearing in Windowmaker? I use Arch, btw.

Going in with Linux. Kubuntu in particular.
Should I go for 1804 LTS or 1810?

LTS

Thoughts on MX Linux? Im hunting for an easy, out of the box experience that looks like Windows 7 and it seems like what i want

> Reddit is a circlejerk

... And it's Facebook now.

I want to learn EMACS. Educational content on YouTube is sparse. Help!

try compton

>avidemux appimage
>built without fontconfig and freetype

Attached: 1520400865600s.jpg (125x95, 2K)

i get my ``appimages'' from the nix package manager

I don't really understand what it is.
Is it kind of like a framework for building "decentralized" programs? Decentralized in the sense of distributing your traffic through everyone else using gnunet apps kind of like Tor?

That concept never really sat well with me, I just don't like the idea of all that traffic going through me and prefer my network to stay nice and quiet when I'm not using it, but I guess I understand why it's needed.

idk, but I'd say that "step 1" is to decide if you want to learn actual emacs hotkeys or vi hotkeys. If the latter then install evil-collection

Now I get diagonal screen tearing.

Augment your wrists. Or learn vi first, then evil mode.

compton --backend glx --paint-on-overlay --vsync opengl-swc

That works. Thanks.

>wanted to upgrade one buggy package from testing->unstable
>accidentally did sudo apt upgrade on whole system
>currently on unstable
did i done fucked up
what do i do now

You're using unstable now. Upgrading is a one way ticket.

ah shiet!
time to backup&reinstall. I can't handle the dangerous life of the unstable

Attached: hvGvNbd.jpg (635x609, 163K)

Why not try it for a while? Check apt listbugs before upgrading and you should be safe. It's not worse than using Arch.

Alright boys, I got a weird one, Im having problems dualbooting opensuse and fedora, with fedoras grub, I don't get snapper, but with opensuses grub, I dont get the latest kernel for fedora, vms are out of the picture because the laptop only has one gpu and can't pass it through, does anyone have any ideas on what to do?

>boys
rude

>with fedoras grub, I don't get snapper, but with opensuses grub, I dont get the latest kernel for fedora
You should only have 1 grub. Are you saying this is what happens when you install grub from within one distro or the other?
Also what the hell is snapper? Random search leads me to believe it's a snapshot tool?

Sorry if what I said was confusing and yes, that is what I mean, tried to rebuild grub on either end and still nothing, im a bit at a loss. Also yes, snapper is a lifesaver built right into it, in case anything shits the bed.

I find it very strange that when installed from opensuse you would see all other kernels from fedora except the latest one. Can you verify that they're all in the same place? In /boot on fedora? Does the latest one have some weird naming convention that differs from the others?
Are you manually running grub-mkconfig to auto detect everything?

Also, for the record you can manually edit grub.conf.
So worst case scenario: you just manually add entries for the stuff that's missing and it should work.

That's where this hole gets deeper, it only sees the kernel when fedora is first installed, so it would be 4.18-something on 29, I can always manually add them, was just trying to avoid it, becuase when I do grub2-mkconfig, it tells me the newer kernels are there, but when I reboot, only gives me 4.18 when I choose fedora. And no, none of them are weirdly named from the next, and they are all in the same place, maybe nothing just wants to play well together. I'm just lazy, but manually doing it isn't a chore.

Attached: 1550707271605.gif (1280x920, 3.01M)

>it only sees the kernel when fedora is first installed
This really just sounds like "grub-install" isn't getting run. I'm guessing your package manager is supposed to do it, so something might be fucked up. Or maybe your package manager doesn't handle that and you're just forgetting to do it yourself?
>when I do grub2-mkconfig, it tells me the newer kernels are there
Can you actually open up grub.conf and see if there are references to the latest kernel?

Another possibility is that grub2-mkconfig and grub-install are looking at 2 different grub.conf files for some reason. So mkconfig is updating a file that isn't getting used by grub-install

I ran a command with &, making it a background process. Then started a rsync with --info=progress2, which shows a live progress in percents of the copying process.
Then the background process outputted some messages to the terminal for some fucking reason. And now my rsync output won't update.

1.) Why does a program still output to terminal even though I used &
2.) How do I check if the rsync is still going
3.) How do I check how far along the rsync is
4.) why doesn't anything ever go the way it's supposed to

Use tmux or screen and just detach. Then you can reattach at a later time and see the rsync progress.
