I want to write a good parser. Consider the following block:

Is it a context-free grammar production? If it is context-free, how can it be tokenized without analyzing the context — i.e. tokenizer should know whether the string is a parseable string or just a literal sequence of characters, right?

Why do people complain about C's string handling?
I found it just fine. The file handling, however, is both platform-dependent and garbage. The time handling, utter rubbish. Random, also shit.
How hard would it be to write a new time() that gives you the time in milliseconds or similar since the epoch as a 64-bit integer?
How hard would it be to write a rename() function that fails if target already exists instead of overwriting?
How hard would it be to add in functions to check if there is a file at path X?
How hard would it be to add in functions that do rand within a range?

And that's why you target POSIX instead, and use all of the POSIX functions which provide the things you're talking about.
Standard C's concept of a file is extremely loose. In fact, it doesn't really mention anything about a filesystem at all. The "paths" are just arbitrary strings that the implementation is free to interpret as whatever the hell it wants.
