with DOS/early Windows era computers, you have to interact with the hardware a lot more, and you need to be more tech savvy to set it up correctly. getting that done can give a sense of accomplishment for a hobbyist

new computers are plug and play tools that do a very good job abstracting everything. there's not much to do with the computer itself because everything just works

it still takes time to setup a new device even if you don't jailbreak or root. PSP had cool stuff like pandora battery but nobody wants stuff harder. CWcheat was way better than gameshark, so good that gameshark got BTFO by it. There's so much that can go wrong with linux that you can just install gentoo and have worse problems
