I don't even use desktop icons on windows. Just install everything and wox and bind it to super or just keep it alt-enter. You can launch everything on your system or open any file by simply typing.

On windows I put my most used programs on the taskbar, and my programs I occasionally use on the start menu. I put files on my desktop but I have icons hidden and only access them from the desktop folder in explorer.
