When will people realise that cancer just happens. Before modern medical science people just dropped dead or quickly deteriorated and nobody had a great explanation of it. Sure, we know that high exposure to radioactive materials or contaminated air particles is a direct causation of radiation poisoning. And if you really want to stretch, you could say that it's a catalyst for cancer cells forming in the body. Hopefully one day we can easily cure all types of cancer, but for now i feel like people don't realise that these things happen, without some sort of direct cause.

No. The radiation stops where it wants to stop and doesn't necessarily interact with anything before that point. Also the outer layer of your epidermis is dead and can't mutate so if it could actually stop radiation you would never be at risk.
