If I want to create a CLI project, I don't give a shit how fast it runs because it will be "good enough" if it's less than 5 seconds to finish, so I can use Ruby for that, and enjoy writing it in a few hours.
If it's for a real project I'd rather use something created for the purpose. Web stuff? Javascript/Node.js, Concurrency? Elixir, Database stuff? Ruby/Rails.
For anything else I'd pick up python and use whatever C library exists, and write easy to read code that is just as fast as C anyway.

I like C. Abusing void * is fun. Not maintainable but fun. Just can't trust my coworkers or myself to create 'correct' programs in C. I prefer Go -- and for what I do it works just as well if not better.

I do use C. Im just too much of a brainlet when it comes to openGL. Its too hard to learn, so I abadobed it and used engibe instead.
