>he doesn't block MILLIONS of hosts

BTW windows can't do this.

yes it can you retard

>he doesn't pihole or openwrt to just do it for his entire network and he's proud of that
no it can't
windows ignores hosts files

Windows literally chokes itself on large hosts files.

no it doesn't.

Why you simply run Pi-hole or something similar?

>Windows literally chokes itself on large hosts files.
wrong, it completely ignores it instead
you are correct this time but for the wrong reasons see above
Windows 7 was the last windows that used hosts file

It literally does, try it yourself. Get something yuuge like energized unified.
Pi hole costs cash.
I literally tried it on my windows 10 install back home. Disabled the dns cache and replaced the stock hosts at system32/drivers/etc/ and it slammed 100% CPU usage after restart.

>and it slammed 100% CPU usage after restart.
you fucked something else up because hosts file on windows 10 DOES LITERALLY NOTHING
Windows 10 ignores the file completly unless it has no access to DNS server

>Pi hole costs cash.
$30 dude
buy it once, set it up, and it will most likely work for over a decade

I didn't fuck anything up, I literally followed the instructions at MVP hosts website. If I didn't disable the DNS service, I had no internet connection at all. When I disabled DNS with autoruns64.exe, I got 100% CPU usage.
When I tried just a several megabyte file, it worked fine.
It literally blocked all the domains listed in the hosts file btw so it literally works, just slower than linux.
$30 is kinda a lot

Have you ever heard of pi-hole or something similar?

>I cut off my PC access to a DNS server and deleted the cache and when I tried to access a website it couldn't find it
You don't need a hosts file for that retard

The only blacklist I have is in the form of a hosts file retard.

ok let me explain to you again to see if your nigger brain can understand this time
A DNS server is what gives you an IP address when you try to access a site like Jow Forums.org or whatever.
You cut your computer access to a DNS server and deleted the cache. So when your computer tried looking up Jow Forums.org it didn't get any response, not because the hosts files was working but because it didn't have access to a DNS server in the first place YOU FUCKING RETARD

Lol such delusional cope. I literally explained to you I had an internet connection and the blacklisted websites got blocked.
Net result: Windows 10 happily works off hosts files.

windows obviously does use the hosts file but chrome itself doesn’t

Ok little niglet explain localhost then.

Host file > DNS server or cache.

>He thinks running the program on the device he browses with is a good idea.

Pi-hole on a separate device, offload the work from your CPU and protect everything downstream.

It does on the system level.

>ftw using Ubuntu 19.04 and fucking mad bitches

>CPU
Barely hits 2%

Post list.

Exactly, it's perfect to run on a small embedded system, and then provides the benifits of blocking ads on every device in your network. Add a VPN and voila, not only is that device giving you mobile as blocking, but it's also giving you an in to your network safely when you are off site.

It's not a bad idea if you already have the hardware for this, but if you don't it's not like UO is much worse for your resources than a typical browser already is.

she doesn't remove duplicates
she doesn't know that ublock filters can allow sites too.

There are no duplicates

I bet you also block google.

>windows ignores hosts files
works here fagosaurus, make sure to make it readonly too.

I've been thinking about putting together a pi-hole, but just clue me in if I'm missing something here:

>raspberry pi with whatever pi-hole software goes between your router and modem (so all your internet traffic goes through the pi)
>pi just outright blocks connects to an enormous list of hosts a la
>this is transparent to the user

But how much does it impact internet speeds?

Will it cause problems with some websites' functionality (youtube, for example)?

Any other issues or concerns I should be aware of?

Can the pi do anything else useful in that scenario or does it need to be dedicated to just blocking hosts?

Comfy

Improves network latency.

This! The wintoddler defense force has arrived!

Jesus just try it our yourself if youve got an android phone. Get Blokada or some shit and max out the hosts.

top kek

$30 is nothing. Get a job.

Or pihole in a fucking VM, it's a DNS server it isn't going to bog down any modern hardware.
