deviantart, furaffinity, hentai-foundry and the like are as much social networks as they're porn dumps. Comment on people's stuff, draw some popular characters of others, have them 'reblog' your stuff and such.
Twitter also accepts drawn porn, apparently, as long as it's not loli content.
Make some friends, join some discords, draw a few free pieces and then post commission sheet.
Keep drawing free stuff now and then to both improve in quality and show it to your users.
Also, Furry/Pony shit has a much better ratio of quality:money. To get OK cash as non-furry artist, you gotta be somewhere near InCase. Furry shit gets upvoted/commissioned even if quality is at best pedestrian as long as commission prices don't bite, since userbase likes to invent their own characters and orgasm over somebody else drawing them.

It's mostly rastor work, people make use of such software like Photoshop, PaintTool SAI, Krita.
I knew an artist who used vector software and his drawings very really nice, but you could tell that it was Vector by it's... shape-ness? I don't think he achieved much prominence beyond his circle of friends and the casuals on art boorus.
Oh, and there are artists who use paper to draw the sketch, then scan it and line/color it in aforementioned software, which is useful if your drawing skills were trained on paper rather than drawing tablet.

I guess I need to up my rastor game. Some of it is so good it almost looks vector at first glance.
Is there a particular furry that is favoured? Like a wolf or a fox or a pony, which would be the best bang for buck to practice drawing? The quality is so good that I think I need to specialise right out of the gate.
Dogs/cats are basic bitch thing since most people like them. Foxes and bunnies are classic for slut-type characters. Deers often get entire threads just for them on /trash/, mice and rats as well. /trash/ is also a good place to catch up on current furry trends.
A lot of artists never really evolve past these, so they end up drawing lions and such like dogs with different paint. None the less, they too have a following.
I'd say focus on universal stuff such as pleasant looking anatomy, color work and fur, add paws if you feel like drawing such. Since most of the furry art is just fur-covered human bodies with animal head, mastering these will make species-picking a bit less troublesome.

Even a 4-page comic can attract people if the action is good and the art is on point. Of course it's pointless to make any sort of advanced story if they fuck by the end of page 1. Since you plan to cashgrab I'd say 12 pages is a good goal for something that has a bit of story and lets you put different poses/angles in various shots.
Look up Hardblush or Wetblush stuff, it's artist cooperation that sells porn webcomics, plenty of their stuff on that chan, you can see it by the group logo on front page. See how many pages they have. E-hentai will help you to check them out for free.
If you suddenly feel like prioritizing story and having porn as part of story/character development, then take as many pages as you like.

I would rather write story because that is my strength, but drawing that many frames is probably going to be grueling as I start out. If successful I will branch out into story, but initially I'll start off with the 4 pager. At 4 pages x 4-5 sections on each page that's a fair bit of drawing already.

The risk vs reward is too high. You need a CS degree for starters, which instantly rules out most people who can't do, or can't stand, calculus. Then there is the huge studen loans, and the fact that most people only want to get that 6 figure job after college. Then if you are the 0.01% of people who aren't that, then you still have to write a code that is better than all the mega-corps. and all the start-ups that have got mega-corp money through angel investors (fyi this makes most startups embryonic mega-corps, look at twitter for reference.)
Finally, your code has to be relevant, proprietary, attract a massive user base, and then make you money somehow, which means selling it (good-bye fanbase and user base) or using ads, which means building in a whole secondary functionality to the entire app, which may only be profitable if the user base is the right demographic and advertisers even hear about your little app.
I don't mean to shit on your parade, but better off writing a book and praying that stephen king dies, all his fans also die, and you get a crap shoot at the new airport #1 bookseller lotto.
