Communism removes the idea of individuality from culture and community in favor of forced conformity for the sake of production. In essence communism teaches you that you're mainly there to produce something and not try to go out your own way.
In National Socialism the idea of free enterprise is still intact. You can still own your own land, own your own possessions and do better for yourself if you work hard to get more.
Communism also calls for class warfare to make one single class but still elevates members of the state above the regular working class. Though their ideology teaches you that everyone is equal in the reality of a communist system some are more equal than others.
The merits to communism is on the small scale distribution of goods to keep the bare essentials. In a small system it makes sense to distribute what you have so that everyone can get their bases covered before delving into extravagance (but communism teaches decadence is bad so don't get more than you need) so everyone for the most part gets to stay alive.
Another merit is how productive a communist state is. Since they've eliminated the idea of anyone being above anyone else say a doctor or astronaut there's no need for the people to waste their time on things like politics or internal occupational power struggles. This makes for a very efficient system that nurtures the natural want of every person to produce SOMETHING.
Downsides you already know starving on the large scale, no individualism, piss poor execution of distribution of resources and basically everything about it going large scale.

Marx wanted class warfare to ensure the redistribution of resources would go off without a hitch since a one party state would be implemented anyway after the revolution.
Nazbol is a little more chill with class division so long as external factors don't cause it.

It's also clear in history that despite what they claimed, much of the population had very significant power over each other in communist systems, this usually being government officials being tyrannical and oppressive. And the productivity can usually be attributed to people being forced to work, rather than the system being naturally productive, at least it is productive in the end.

It's just part of the rhetoric. You've gotta learn a little bit of all of them. By far radical deregulation and more libertarian ideologies were the hardest to choke down.

You're right though. That's just a few of the inherent problems of applied large scale communism. Besides having resource shortages, state farms falling into disrepair and having to kill political dissidents to keep the status quo the forced labor is by far the worst of it all. The USSR didn't like sending men into space over concerns they wouldn't come back. When talking communism most people want to talk theoretical communism (on paper) instead of applied communism (china, cuba, etc) because it doesn't give the same feefees to talk what is actually fact.
In the end individualism and liberty aren't the top priority in a communist system.
To have a rigorous understanding of every political system so you can weigh the pros and cons of each to either credit or discredit a particular method of how to applied government to an entity, people or nation.

Probably not.

I hope you see now what point political science has. Sure not everyone should be involved in politics but if you're going to complain you should know what you're complaining about.
For example during the election many people voted for Trump due to the fact he would've instituted a flat tax system which would've removed many tax loopholes the upper class use thus forcing them to pay upwards of 100-300% more in taxes. This was a great idea on paper but unfortunately a massive overhaul like that would take more time than Trump has. Many people saw it as giving the rich a break but misinterpreted how it would work because SURPRISE they didn't know what the hell they were talking about.
That's the point of polisci to inform people on what's really going on behind all the smoke and mirrors of politics. You get exposed to so many different ideologies, understand why certain systems are setup the way they are and get to delve into the pros and cons of every party.
Think of it like buying a car for your country. Wouldn't you want to know as much as possible?
I'm not trying to sound like I know better or be a dick it's just I never understood why people hate on polisci majors and call us useless but then spout the most nonsensical garbage only to sprinkle it with some political sounding jargon.
