It's more like 250 where I am
Why are all Kickstarter mechanical keyboards so crappy?
Why can't someone just use 1920s typewriter-style lever keys to give the best mechanical typing experience possible?
I know it's not the same country, but by chance do they sell HHKBs in Korea? I have a friend there and would ask him to get me one if they have it and if its cheaper there than to order online
Because then you'd be bottle necked by the actual mechanism. IBM tried that in the early 70s by converting their typewriters into computer keyboards and they kept breaking down. These typewriters weren't cheaply built they were made to last, but they just couldn't handle the rapid repeated double-taps of modern computing. So IBM came up with beamsprings to emulate the feel of their typewriters while lasting much longer.
what's the most you guys have spent on a keycap(s)?
$5
If you're counting whole keycap sets, then $125.
Like 25 bucks on a standard 108-key set of chink PBT/POM doubleshots.
Considering going all out on a KBD19X and buying one of those ~100 dollar sets of either PBT dyesubs or maybe a set of SA caps though.
GMK sky dolch + GMK GB blanks
$250
redpill me on abs vs pbt
ABS is inevitably going to shine up in years, if not months. PBT is a harder, more resistant plastic so even sets with several years of use will show little to no signs of shining up.
>everyone always sleeping on POM
Cheapest Japanese caps I can find?
There aren't enough POM keycaps, agreed. At least the new profile that novelkeys is working on will be doubleshot POM.
I hope they'll do a white-on-black set at some point, that's something I'd be willing to tank the intercontinental shipping, 21% VAT and customs fees on top for.
w2c these keycaps?
>Because then you'd be bottle necked by the actual mechanism
But I want to type slower.
zeal is a scammer
all the kb discords have overactive SJW/jew mods and you cant say retard or faggot
/mkg/ likes fucking buckling springs or some shit
geekhack full of retarded faggots buying $500 aluminum bricks and $200 ABS
where the fuck is the best place to talk about keyboards where you can say retard
zeal sent me my caps, what did he scam on?
anything with visible moderation positions is generally shit, and especially keyboard shit because it's so full of r*ddit/geekh*ck shit anyway
/mkg/ is still the best place to shitpost about keyboards assuming you can ignore the copefags that actually bought torpre rubber domes
can't, they were sold on massdrop a while back and we're still waiting on our orders because assdrop. you'll have to either deal with it, buy chink knockoff, or go to the secondary market and sell your tight ass
the people saying "abs has different quality, it's not all bad" are the same people who sell sets of used keycaps for above MSRP, PBT won't betray you unless it's a warped spacebar
Around 300 USD for the upcoming Symbiosis SA set.
Pbt is generally the way best way to go, but when it comes to ABS I still say that doubleshot SA caps are fine. Fuck people who buy and resell tho. If you're buying caps at all it's going to be about vanity, otherwise you could just buy some shitty chink ripoff caps and be done with it.
There's acceptable and there's "I'd pay more than $60 for some keycaps," and ABS falls under acceptable for me
>I still say that doubleshot SA caps are fine
Because SA looks best shiny. ABS and THICCness also make for nicer sound.
That's fair, it's all what you're interested in anyways. I actually like the wornout look of old abs SA caps. I don't know why but the SA sets in abs that I've owned are sculped and even when they shine, the light hits at a bunch of different angles. Where it gets smooth leaves like a soft 'well' to rest your finger in.
Those abs cherry keysets I laugh at whenever I see. The cylindrical dish of the cap just gathers light and looks fucking horrible.
Why shouldn't I buy caps off aliexpress?
Virgin Cherry MX Blue
Chad kailh box + SPRiT 40g clickbar&150g spring
What did you gentlemen do on this Day of the Lord?
Should I spend a hundred USD for a Bluetooth memepad keyboard?
Not mechanical per se, but I'm looking for something wireless with a trackpoint
It's over. Cherry is finished
What is this? Link.
Ask yourself what day it is today, user.
???
Go make a rubber done general for that
>Topre doesn't belong on a mechanical keyboard general
Long shipping time
it's a rubber dome keyboard though
At work making labels right now my man. Fucking wish I had more time to shitpost but I really just don't.
That's $1000 in blanks and chocs. The worst part is those all need to be spring swapped :(
>RUBBERDOME BAD
>COILSPRING GOOD
Neat mod user
It's okay if you like inferior keyboards. They just don't belong in a thread about mechanical ones.
>ME NO LIKE RUBBER
>ME ONLY LIKE SPRING
>RUBBER NO MECHANICAL
Every keyboard is mechanical.
FUCK YOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Clean your '8' keycap
small ball
About 100 something on the Canvas,
~$120 for XDA Canvas
~$110 for SA Dasher
~$110 for DSA Dolch
And an additional $80 on cheap ABS sets, around 3 in total
So around $420 in total?
Reminder that retooled blacks are the best linear switch
Odd way of saying Wooting Flaretech Blacks
too comfy
Bought the original DSA Granite and Dolch with add-ons back in the day for about $130 apiece for the extra specials and crap. Sold them both for what I paid for them.
I just eventually realized that for what people pay for modern repro caps, you can get a whole fucking vintage board for. You can get an old Fujitsu with their legendary super thick caps and fancy leaf spring switches for fifty bucks and they're the original that people are trying to imitate just the caps of for double the price. Anything short of a Space Cadet or a Beamspring is pretty damn cheap if you catch it at the right time.
Why pay more for a copy when you can get the real thing and convert it, right?
What's the best place to buy those bumpers that shorten the throw of the keys?
What are the cheapest good mechanical keyboards?
they recommended me a tada68 and it squeaks
can i get a quick rundown on pic related
are red dragon mechanical keyboards (at least) decent?
I recently bought some Jade switches, and am now considering getting some Navy switches.
Is this where I start just buying fuck loads of switches and it becomes an addiction?
What have you done to me, /mkg/?
$89USB
Bought DSA overcast a few years ago of MD
What's a cheap keycap set you faggots would recommend? Bought one on the Aliexpress sale, but they said there was no stock so got a refund. Was really hoping for that set.
The general idea is doubleshot PBT, right?
Buy topre, lubed linears, and click bars for end game friends
Yeah, doubleshot or dyesub but you're probably not gonna find any dyesub sets for real cheap.
I got one of those generic white/grey backlit sets that has about a billion rebrands, it's a bit rough around the edges but it cost me like 25 bucks so I'm not complaining.
If you want something actually pretty good, those Ducky or Ducky x Akko sets are still fairly affordable and come in some nifty colorways (and some real retina burners).
Or just browse KBDfans and see if they've got anything you like the looks of.
Endgame for clickies is buckling or beam springs
I also have this question, is this quality?
How do gateron browns feel compared to mx browns?
don't really know about cherry
but the gaterons are good
probably the lightest springs out of all tactile switches, so yeah the tactility is super light too
I have a wired one. It is quality. But the wireless is about $100 which is quite expensive. Like half the price of a hhkb
I prefer pale blue to unicomp but haven't tried beam springs
>IBM tried that in the early 70s by converting their typewriters into computer keyboards and they kept breaking down
I said 1920s style. Were they still using arms in the 1970s to type?
No they were using fingers.
Yes they are decent, I've been using the Red Dragon K556 for almost 2 years.
No they were using their balls
cute balls, user
user take your meds
happy thanksgiving to all!
>Finally fall for the mechanical meme.
>Get an 80% with Matias Quiet-Clicks
>Have to exchange it in the first week because of key-chatter.
>Get it back and it works ok for a few months.
>Contact leaf in the A-key cracks.
>Order replacement switches and solder in a replacement.
>Same thing happens to the A-key a few weeks later.
>Repeat repair.
>Things working ok for a while.
>Getting really used to the form factor and longer key travel of mech boards.
>Order a nice aluminum case for home.
>Decide to get an 80% with Matias Clicks for home, and use the quiet-clicks at work.
>80% with clicks has 5 switches fail with a cracked leaf in a 6-month period.
>Bring the quiet-click board home from work.
>One more switch fails.
>Finally reach my limit with that shit and order an 80% with Cherry Blues.
>No issues since.
>Still like the feel of the matias clicks over the blues.
>Now I constantly fuck up on the shitty keyboard of the macbook pro my employer provides.
>Want to buy another 80% at work so I'm not fucking up all the time.
>Over $300 in.
>Two useless boards with nice Dolch cap-sets that are incompatible with non-ALPS switches.
>Still need one more so I can actually type consistantly.
Is this the power of mechanical keyboards?
Matias V80 and V60 is notorious for chatter.
That's the power of Matias boards, sadly.
Now get yourself some clickbars.
The chatter seemed to be entirely resolved by cleaning the swtich out and re-lubricating with some light silicone and a short break-in period.
The thing I just couldn't fucking get over was the actual breakages. The one contact leaf goes all the way through the bottom of the swtich housing and provides the pin that solders to the board. This piece would crack right at the point where it's supposed to flex on a keystroke. I had this happen to almost 10 switches across two boards, one clicks and one quiet clicks. Absolute fucking garbage.
Love the feel of the switches, but that shit is inexcusable. I've literally never had a rubber dome board fail. I guess I should have just bought Cherry to start with.
Go try some Kailh Box clickies. White, pale blue, pink, jade and navy.
They feel much nicer than MX blue/green.
I like testing new switches out by playing osu!mania
just got this. Was it a good deal?
Why is this the best keyboard in existence?
Not really.
I mean it isn't. Starcraft players went through them like it was crack at an wall street high class investor's meeting.
Thoughts on 24k gold plated gmk screw in stabs? Meme or some how improvement?
Meme
Stabilisers don't need to conduct electricity, so the gold plating is functionally pointless
Not only do they not need to THEY SHOULDN'T.
I'm extremely wary of anything that isn't Cherry now because of the absolute GARBAGE reliability of the Matias switches. Is Kailh really up to snuff for QA?
I've definitely grown to like typing on a mechanical, and while I get that some people like it enough to turn it into a hobby, and actually enjoy modifying and repairing their keyboards, that shit is NOT how I want to spend my free time.
I want something that once I get it all set up and working it just fucking works
My opinion: cherry clones ars hard to fuck up. Alps clones are hard to get right.
Kailh used to be pretty crap when they were just starting out making MX knockoffs, but they've come a long way since then and they're quite in touch with the enthusiast community. Box switches are damn solid.
Alps switches and their clones are inherently sensitive to dust and are really hard to get right, whereas MX switches and clonesbmay feel and sound worse, but they're pretty reliable. Box switches actually add improved dust- and even water resistance to the mix.
Ok next question, are screw in really any better than snap in?
Yes 100%
You can pull snap in off by removing caps and not be able to get them back on without desoldering, it's happened to me.
Just ordered GMMK with blue gradient PBT keycaps, and halo true switches.
My wet dream is a laptop that has two Gergo halves that pop out the sides like CD trays
What if I have a hot swap board
are there any full size mechanical keyboards without the faggot lighting shit, pure utilitarian and at a good price
Probably the Model F XT
>Budget
100usd or less
>Location (continent at least)
canada
>Preferred switch type
never owned a mech keyboard
>Layout
either
>Form factor
full but ill accept tenkeyness esp if cheaper
>Backlight
yes!!! this is the main reason why im posting i want NON-GAMER backlight keyboard preferably. Is that even possible? If there no choice then ill settle with a gamer keyboard
>Previous/current keyboards
current is membrane and breaking. If its possible, having volume keys would be appreciate.
what do you recommend?
